Weapons surrender

program set for Dec. 14

Owners of firearms and other weapons are invited to surrender them Saturday at the Old Bridge Police Department, Route 516.

As part of a program implemented by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, weapons will be accepted on a "no questions asked" basis from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Prosecutor’s Office will offer a $500 reimbursement for those who surrender assault weapons during this program.

While other weapons will be accepted, there will be no compensation paid, according to information released by the Prosecutor’s Office.

Assault weapons are considered the most dangerous of all firearms, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, and they have been illegal in New Jersey since 1990.

Saturday marks the second surrender date this year, and the Prosecutor’s Office is expected to hold such dates on an ongoing and rotating basis. Some $60,000 of seized and forfeited funds has been designated for the program.

"It is important, particularly in this time of heightened security concerns, to reduce the number of guns and other weapons presently in our community," Freeholder Chris Rafano said. "Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan’s program will help reduce violence involving firearms and will also allow citizens who own firearms, but who are unwilling or unable to properly supervise them, to dispose of them in a safe and legal way. This program will also provide an outlet for the many New Jersey residents who own, but failed to register assault rifles, a chance to rid themselves of those illegal weapons safely, without legal detriment, and with some compensation."

Prior to a November weapons surrender event in Piscataway, the Prosecutor’s Office had already collected 88 firearms, including 49 assault weapons, more than 50 magazines and more than 600 pounds of ammunition.

A county policy requires that all weapons surrendered to the prosecutor’s office be destroyed.

It is important, particularly since there are mad dogs running loose that want to kill us, to reduce our ability to do anything about it.
