:D  Monkey is totally new to this type of handling, so if anyone can instruct me which one to buy?( 500.00 or less) AK 47? 74? SKS? Ruger? Hunting rifle? anything cheap and ammo doesnt cost Monkey a paycheck! Thanx eeh eeh.

I bought a range of inexpensive rifles to enjoy.

.22LR Marlin model 60

SKS and Mosin Nagant

And now an AR just for kicks. And I wouldn't mind a SAR-1 too.

Lots of surplus stuff out there, you should easily be able to get a Ruger 10/22 and an SKS for less than $500.

Don't buy anything until you have a clear idea of what you're going to use it for.

Heed that advice. If you want to shoot varmints, then a .22lr or mag would be fun. If you just wanna plink then a .22 or SKS would be good. If you want to do some longer range stuff, an AR is fun but the rifle will cost you more bucks. These are all just suggestions and YMMV.

8mm Mauser. I am considering this rifle at the moment, as it is cheap to own, cheap to shoot ($.07 per round, but corrosively primed) and it very good quality.

Like others have said, heed the "dont buy until you know what its going to be used for" advice. If you buy a .22 you wont be able to go hunting for anything but small game and self-defense will not be a viable option. However, if you buy a 700 Nitro Express, you wont be able to hunt anything on this continent without having to package the instant hamburger you just made.

A lever action in a pistol caliber is a good choice, as ammo is plentiful and it can be used for hunting and SD in a pinch.

As others have said, I STRONGLY urge you to decide the purpose of your rifle first, rather than after you buy something! Also avoid buying someone else's favorite just because they like it.

What to buy?

For $500.00 or less there is a whole bunch of stuff you can buy. You could even get two or three if you played your cards right. Don't get something you can't afford to shoot. Whatever you buy you should find out before you buy it what the ammo cost and if it is available locally. Ordering it is okay but getting it at the local service station is better. If you have never owned a rifle before a good place to start is going to a local range if there is one near. It doesn't cost anything to look and ask questions and most shooters are a friendly lot. If you can borrow or look at most reloading manuals they have a little write up on each caliber listed and you can find out lots of info there. Most guys that you talk with and asked what one rifle would they choose if they had to pick and use just that one for everything will tell you a .22 Long Rifle. It has taken most everything that walks one way or another. It is cheap to buy, get ammo for, quite, accurate and is the absolute best way to start if this is your first rifle. Heck you could buy a nice .22 and have at least $300.00 left to get a center fire of some sort if you wanted. For $500.00 you can start yourself a collection or get just one and learn to shoot it really, really well. Have fun and take care.

I paid $475 for my L1A1 308 cal.
$150 Finn. M39 Mosin Nagant. 7.62x54R
$300 Egyptian AK47 7.62x39
$150 Chinese SKS 7.62x39
$500 Ruger Mini 14 223 Rem
All are very cheap to shoot.

You should definitely snag an unissued Yugo SKS while you can.In hand price should be about $200.00.Then trot down to your local Wal-Mart and pick up a Remington 597 in .22lr for about $150.00.Get 550 rounds of Remingtons golden bullet and start blastin! Two of the best rifles money can buy.;)
