Moon Clips

Taurus moon clips are made differently then those for S&W .45 ACP.

I believe they left little fingers between each space in the clip that could spring more and make mooning & de-mooning easier.

Ahhhhhh, thank you; that clears it up.

As for .44 Spl. handling a wider variety of bullet shapes? Not if you reload!
The .45 AR loads in the lower right corner are loaded with half-jacket flat point. The same bullets can be loaded in .45 ACP cases just as easily.

Yes, sir, you are correct, as you say, if you reload. I should have clarified that I mean, if shooting off the shelf ammo, which MOST people do when it comes to their actual carry defense loads, even if they reload for practice, I'd venture to guess.

I suppose that in the case of Bart Simpson, a "de-mooning tool" would take the guise of a belt with a lockable belt buckle, so that he couldn't drop his pants.

My S&W 1917 is the only SD revolver I have. Someone did a Fitz job to it, probably in the '50s. Shoots dead on.

I use the full moon clips. Loading is not a problem. Getting empty cases out of the clips used to be a difficult, but I made a tool out of 1/2-inch PVC to do the job. That made it a snap. I recently had the opportunity to buy 10 clips with a metal unloading tool for less than $10 and couldn't be happier with the arrangement.

I also found that my .44 mag double speedloader pouch holds four full-moon clips of .45 acp.

It is a very comfortable rig (2 1/2-inch barrel) in DA only and I can carry 24 rounds for backup. Suffice to say I don't feel undergunned when I carry it.

I have a bunch of .45s. This one is 91 years old and I'd be willing to wager I'll have it long enough to hand it down to one of my sons. The one who shows it the proper respect.

I just picked up a Smith 325PD 45 ACP and in a few minutes of practice, I had combat reloads drilled down to 2 seconds. Moon clips brings wheel-guns on par with semi-autos as PD weapons. I say on par because, IMHO, reliability is a no-brainer trade off against ammo capacity.

Hi,

Moon clips are truly NOT a problem loading or unloading. Heck, you can do it with bare hands even . . . although it isn't too comfortable.

MOON CLIP BENEFIT . . .

When the SHTF, you'll be glad you have your pre-loaded moon clips with you, for a faster reload under stress simply can't be had . . . and this is exactly why we have guns in the first place . . . to be efficient when needed. I personally prefer the set up below to my 1911s for self defense.

Here's my car set up that goes in my glove compartment when I'm on the road. Six rounds of instant .45ACP in the chopped Model 25-2, backed by EIGHT loaded moon clips of six rounds for backup that are held in a plain old Federal centerfire rifle cartridge holder.

Some are Hydrashocks for SD, others are hardball and the nasty Aguilla 117gn. "silver" bullets you see that do so well in an area sheriff's dept. tests against car doors and glass.

MOON CLIP HASSLE . . .

When nuthin' is going on, you can load 'em easily without tools. For demooning, even a Bic ballpoint pen can be inserted inside the spent cartridge and used to help your inside-the-moonclip finger to slide 'em out. Ain't no big deal!

Actually, I found the .357 magnum fairly difficult to do by hand. I'd rather use the right tool for the job...I'll save my Bic pens for writing.

Here's a clip that will show you just how fast moon clips can be. It's a video of Jerry Miculek attaining his world revolver records. In the third one he fires six shots, reloads (with moon clip) and fires six more in under 3 seconds.

I wouldn't want to be the bad guy that picks him to rob...

Moon clips take a little getting used to, but I think they're worth it. I have them for my 940 and they work great. Great way to carry extra rounds too. They are the closest to the convenience of a magazine that a revolver user can get.

You will need the tools. I can load them with effort but getting the empties by hand is damaging to the hands.
I need to buy the polymer ones, even if they wear out they have to be better on the brass.
