Two men fired on a Riviera Beach police officer with assault rifles Friday morning. A police spokeswoman said no one was injured.
One of the suspected gunmen was later caught in Mangonia Park, spokeswoman Rose Anne Brown said, and police were still searching for the other.
The incident started at about 5 a.m. when a person flagged down a Riviera Beach police officer reporting an attempted armed robbery near Old Dixie Highway and West 27th Street. Another officer saw a vehicle matching the one used in the attempted armed robbery and began following it.
The pursuit ended in Mangonia Park, and the two occupants got out of the stolen Honda SUV they were driving.
As the police officer got out of his car, the gunmen fired with assault weapons and the officer took cover.
Police established a perimeter in the area, which included the closing of part of 45th Street, and began searching for the gunmen. K-9 units tracked a suspect to the Tiffany Lake development, where one suspect was found in an apartment with four others.
Police were questioning all five and searching for the other gunman late Friday morning, Brown said.
Brown said police were investigating whether there was a link a case Wednesday night in which a woman sitting in a car in Riviera Beach was caught in a gunfight. An SUV with a similar description was reportedly involved Wednesday, and "we believe it was the same kind of weapon," she said.
Is it just me, or have Floridians been having more than our share of bad press?
