In a story about the unrest in Haiti, there was this photo of an American Embassy Diplomatic Security Special Agent.

He looks to be well armed.

Who are these guys and what type of weapon is he holding?

Looks like a bundle of sticks to me...

Oh, the other guy! I dunno much about that stuff - what's the difference between an M-4 and an AR-15? Automaticness?

Either way, it's gotta be nice to work with equipment that nice.

Anyone besides me notice the "DEA and Aristide are twins" painted in red on the wall?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess the 3rd worlders don't want us there huh?

I don't think we belong there, other than to defend and/or evacuate our embassy, or their president if he seeks political assylum. We Americans are not the world's police!

The only place we should "evacuate" Aristide from is a C-130 at approximately 20,000 ft. He's a ruthless, Communist tyrant that never should have been in the presidency....

...no wonder Clinton liked him.

You give Aristide too much credit, to raise him to the level of tyrant. Thug, period. Leftist Thug. Captain HappyPant's favorite Hatian leader. No more than that.

The gloves are probably to protect his hands in case he needs to drop to a prone position quickly. They'll prevent him from scraping his palms.

Thug, period. Leftist Thug

what he replaced and the "other options" in the so called election that spawned him were cut from the exact same cloth. in fact, it's a very scary fact but, Aristide was actually the best Hati could do.....

Personally i'll put it like a friend of mine who is a former medical missionary to Hati, once did.
"If Hati errupts into large scale revolt again, what the US should do is skip the "trying to fix things" stage, and evacuate all the americans in-country, embassy staff, businessmen, and all the missionary types they can get to come. b/c no matter what the locals aren't going to stop till they've destroyed half the country anyway....."

DSS provides security for all US government officials exclusive of POTUS and VPOTUS. I.E., cabinet secretaries, senators, representatives. Marines are primarily at embassies to protect classified materials. They do it by guarding the primary access points (the entrance doors) to the embassies.

I wouldn't say that Aristide is my favorite Haitian leader - I just happen to have a soft spot for small island nations that kick the junk out of our favorite cheese-eating "superpower."

Addendum: it looks like Aristide followed the fine Gallic military tradition.

He's also got twin thigh holsters on.

Ol boy is starting to remind me of the guy on "I'm gonna get you sucka". :D

"Just how many three-letter agencies do we actually have with guns?"

FLETC has 76 different permanent training programs, if memory serves me correctly. (That's 76 departments, agencies, sub-agencies... That number fluxuates now and then.)

Most, but not all, revolve around training badge and gun types.

The DSS special agents I've met were all well educated, very motivated, go to guys who seemed as though they were quite capable of walking what ever walk they were talking-- err... rather, whatever walk someone else was talking about.

Best of luck to the DSS SAs and Marines in country, regardless of which country that may be.

over seas security

It depends on the person holding the weapon. Sandline co and others as well as Black water guys are there. I think. Consuler security. etc. the fast marines carry MP-5s, bennelli shotguns and most others carry some type of m-4. there are also french pukes over there by the dozen....
