I have had a couple of Mauser project guns going for sometime now. A Turk. K.Kale large ring with small threads in .280 Remington with a heavy barrel and a Gew.98 in 8x57 to be rebarrelled in .257 Roberts. The Gew98 is an Oberndorff with a manufacturing date of 1899 on the receiver. I bought it as a basket case over 30 years ago. It has taken a number of whitetail deer in the original 8x57S chambering. I recently got a .257 Roberts barrel off Gunbroker.com and sent it off to my smith in Selma,Al. I got my barrelled action back from the gunsmith last week,$189.00 to switch barrels, set headspace and re-cut the muzzle, shipping both ways included(a 30 day turn around). I have a re-worked Interarms stock and a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40 scope ready to go. I still have to blue some small parts and final bed the action. Not much left to do EXCEPT for ONE little problem. I just had a double heart by-pass two weeks ago and I have the will to get to work but not the strength. The parts are just "positioned" for the pic. I am REALLY looking forward to finishing this one!:)

What is the reason that you are weak? It was my understanding that once the pipes are unclogged, ones strength would come back almost immediately. Did you have a heart attack before getting the by pass?

What was your reason for choosing that particular caliber?

I hope you get to feeling better so you can finish your projects.
I've converted 3 Turk Mausers myself, with a couple more actions waiting for me to get ambitious again.

We'll be waiting for a range report in the future on the 280 and the BOB.
Take care.

My pipe weren't just unclogged, they were replaced(no heart attack). It takes a little while after your chest is split open and re-wired closed. It is surprising how much chest muscle action it takes just to assemble a Mauser bolt. I have loved the 7x57 Mauser cartridge for years so the Bob was just a natural progression.

Yep, the bypass will leave a person weak for some time. Glad to hear you're on the mend Jimmy. That's a nice looking setup. Pretty much the perfect deer rig, IMO.

The Roberts is a good choice for a number of reasons. It's an easy conversion for one, having the same X by 57 dimensions as the original mausers. As a cartridge, it's one of those do-all middle of the road things. A 120 grain bullet at 2800-2900 fps or a 75 grain bullet at 3200+ will get the job done on varmints to elk with little recoil and noise.

Update on the Turk .280

Here is the K.Kale Turk so far. Still have to have the barrel installed and headspaced. I'll weld up the capture screw holes and do the final bluing. This one is a little heavy but should shoot well.

Another Mauser conversion

This is my Colombian Mauser that I "assembled" in .308 Winchester. The stock is a pull off from a Remington Model798.

Might as well add another one while I'm at it. This is a 1912 Mexican Mauser with a new Douglas barrel in 7x57mm. Fajen synthetic stock,Bold trigger,etc,etc....Barska scope has been replaced with a Nikon 3x9x40 Pro-Staff in Realtree APG camo. Rifle in the walnut stock is a 1935 Chinese "Chaing Kai Shek" receiver with a new Latin contract 18'' barrel also in 7x57mm,it is VERY accurate!
