His next post to me:

With regards your question about defending yourself-no way as it is against the law, unless you are a farmer or have a particular reason you cannot own a gun. If you hit someone that is breaking into your home etc they can then sue you and the police will charge you with assault.

Incidentally, the police have STILL not arrived and he has been told "not to expect them any time soon".

Fortunately his insurance company is foregoing the formalities.

I won't post his rant on NZ I'd only get in trouble except, in his words, they (the NZ Gov't) have also recently done away with the term "Marriage" and now call it "Civil Union" I'll let you guess why.

Alex,

Check my previous thread on the subject :Life in NZ and that may fill in the gaps for you. I didn't want to bump it.

Here's a little more from my friend:

the Maori-they are treated like royalty here and yet they are the main cause of all the crap that goes on here-from drug supply, robbery, home invasions, rape and to an average of 4 murders committed by Maori here a week. Don’t believe a word of what you hear about this place being all that and a whole lot more-realistically it is probably like the neighbourhoods in your country where crime and violence is prolific.

Mental note: Stay away from New Zealand!

Before we get any ranting going on I'm sure that not ALL the Maori are bad but like any society there are a few. They are unchecked in NZ as they are the indigenous people so, per Gov't policy, everybody else is pretty much a squatter and have no rights in regards to the actions of the Maori. At least, that's my take on it from what I've been told about the situation.

As a "genuine" passport-holding Kiwi....

I think perhaps 280PLUS' correspondent hasn't had direct experience with the NZ firearms licencing system.

My ten-year "A" (rifles, shotguns and airguns) N.Z. Firearms Licence, while ridiculously complicated to obtain by U.S. standards, isn't as tough to get as any of the Australian firearms licences I've held.

I hold it on the basis of hunting and target-shooting, as do the majority of N.Z. shooters.

The basic firearms licence costs NZ$135 for ten years, and involved having two references testify to my good character and safety with firearms as well as a private police interview with my wife and her mother  .

Unlike here in Oz, I am not required to register any rifles or shotguns (unless I hold an "E" endorsment for Military Style Semi-Autos or MSSA's), nor am I required to "justify" the possession of any specific rifle shotgun or airgun.

The Labour Government of Helen Clark has advocated some really stupid and devisive legislation which has resulted in quite a lot of ill-will amongst non-Maori and Maori alike.

Proposals such as awarding Maori interests broadcasting rights - on the basis that it was originally 'their' air the signals travel through.

More recently, legislation was proposed to return all riverbanks, foreshores and lakeshore to exclusive Maori control...despite their being held as "Crown Reserve" (public lands) since the days of Queen Victoria. Yes - the same Queen the Maori's "Treaty of Waitangi" was signed with back in 1840. Public reaction to this legislation was not favourable (especially amongst fishers, hikers and hunters) and it was defeated. It was by no means supported by a majority of Maoris.

I guess, as 280PLUS noted, I'm trying to caution against stereotyping the Maori by associating the whole lot with a few ranting "activists" and their radical pakeha advocates.
:scrutiny:

Certainly Maori are disproportionately represented in NZ crime statistics, as are south pacific islanders in general.

A substantial number of Maori hold NZ firearms licences, as the tradition of subsistence hunting is strong among the rural Maori.

Hi fallingblock!

Thanks for chiming in. You're probably right about my friend's lack of knowledge on the firearms laws. When he said "gun" I believe he meant for personal defense. CCW is only allowed to a few. Am I correct? I'm referencing it to Aussie laws thinking they would be the same for some reason.

What time is it there?

Cheers!

:D

Just caught this:
as well as a private police interview with my wife and her mother .

LMAO...

and to an average of 4 murders commited by a Maori here a week

I question that being that comes out to 208 murders commited by Maoris a year.
According to NZ's statistic website there was an average from 1994 to 2000 of
40 to 66 murders a year
8 to 23 manslaughters a year
and 0 to 2 infancticites a year.

While I'd like to see more recent stats you too are probably correct. I submit my friend is a bit upset and just blowing off steam.

You would be too if your place had been burglarized and a week later still no police. This we know is fact.

It's good to know NZ isn't quite as murderous a place as I was led to believe.

Thanks for the input.

:D

NZ does not have a high homicide rate.....

And has an extremely LOW rate for firearms crime. :D

However, violent crime excluding murder is rising rapidly,
as are crimes against property.

Poor little N.Z. was almost truly utopia thirty years ago -
and then the world's problems caught up with it. :(

Absolutely positively correct on that point!
The firearms laws are easier on the law-abiding inN.Z. than in any Australian state...so far. :scrutiny:

You'd have to have a very convincing argument indeed to secure
any form of concealed carry permit in New Zealand. I doubt that there are more than a few dozen nationwide, if that many. :barf:

N.Z. juries have historically been very reluctant to convict people who were obviously acting in self-defence while in fear of their life, even if the defence involved a firearm. Handguns are not very common outside a few gangs and about 2,500 legal pistol club members.

As discussed by PM....dangerously close to domestic dischord time.
I have to cut back on this computer time.... :D
