It was unclear whether the confiscated weapons belonged to Ludwig or his parents.

David Ludwig apparently was an avid hunter and posted 20 pictures labeled "Hunting 2004" on a Web site that included an image of him posing with freshly killed deer.

Neither of Ludwig's parents is licensed as a firearms dealer or collector, according to the national licensing center of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

I like how that block of text is just slammed right into the middle of the article, with no relevance to the rest of the piece. :barf:

I've been looking for more on this and cannot find info anywhere. I'm interested in knowing why the guns were confiscated. I did find an article that said the weapons were taken before he was caught, which opens the door to the possibility that the family wanted the guns removed in case he returned. This is a regional story for me, the parents seem like nice normal people. They are not defending their son, and have expressed their remorse as a family. One family member on TV, thanked the Indiana police for not hurting him when they caught him.

I am bothered by what appears in my opinion to be sloppy weapons storage, allowing him access to a handgun. It would have belonged to someone else because you have to be 21 in Pa. to own a handgun.

My money is on the girl being implicated in the murder. In Pa. they will press hard to make that case. If she isn't implicated, you can be sure there is no evidence at all. My opinion is that she is a foolish little girl who got in deeper than she ever imagined possible.

I am also finding it hard to have a lot of sympathy for her.
You reap what you sow.

As far as sloppy weapons storage;

If you think your son is a great kid and he goes hunting with you and is safe handling firearms why should he not have access to a handgun at age 18?
Especially for home defense.
I am sure many here have shown their more responsible offspring how to access a gun if the SHTF.
Of course this kid was not a great kid.

My other comment is slightly more controversial.
When insane murderers are starting out as children they often kill dogs and cats and other small animals before progressing to humans. Sort of practicing their killing.
Unfortunately, in this case, his killing instinct was focussed towards hunting, so many of the early telltale signs of nuttiness were obscured by his involvement in a perfectly legal and harmless (to humans) sport.

This is no disrespect to hunters or an insinuation that they are nuts in any way. :D

Animal torture and killing is typical of budding serial killers, but I've seen no indication that this guy fit that description. Wierd, and apparently unstable, but not necessarially a serial killer. In that sense, his killing of animals (hunting) probably has no corelation at all to his progression to killing people.

I'm going to have to agree with sumpnz, and not with GT.
A lot of people kill animals out of need for food.
My uncle, his wife and kids wouldn't be able to eat as much as they have hadn't he killed a couple of deer this season.
Just because a person kills an animal doesn't mean they're insane.

Now a person who tortures an animal...

There's something really strange about that girl, at least with the way everything has been presented in the media (and we all know how trustworthy the media can be). They're still calling her a victim, yet she went willingly with the guy after he shot her parents (in the case of the dad in the back, and the mom while she sat in a chair). That hardly seems like a crime of passion. As he drove away she ran after him and jumped in the car when he stopped. After all that they apparently wanted to get far away, get married, and start "a new life". There's something rotten in the state of Denmark.

I have to think that she knew he planned to kill them if they reacted the way they did. She may well have even encouraged that act, though we may never know that for certain. I just can't imagine any other scenario where a 14 year old girl would want to stay with (even chase after) the guy that had just murdered her parents in cold blood.

Oh and mbs357, I took GT's response to be aggrement with my assesment (though I could be mistaken).

I have a daughter.

I will never forget this media story/case.

When my daughter starts dating (oh how it disgusts me to even think of such a thing...but I know logically that it is an inevitability) I guess I'll have to regard the boys who pursue her as a potential threat and just step up into condition orange whenever I have encounters with them.

I can't believe it's come to this.

Yeppers. I recall quite clearly the "evil designs" I had for a certain red-head in H.S. (and she for me, but thats beside the point). Personally I like the habit a recently deceased friend had when HIS daughter's potential suitors would come calling.

He'd take out his guns to clean.

May not have even phased this Ludwig looser, but then again it may have given him 2nd thoughts if such had happened.

I think its been like this for the majority of human history for most parents. The idyllic period we in the U.S experienced in the 20th century was an aberration. It was *NICE*, but those days will not be seen again in our lifetimes.

Too bad the girl's parents didn't have any guns, allowing their killer to strike with impunity.
