I have a Remington speedmaster .22 rifle. Sometimes there is not enough power to work the action (it will chamber another round but will not recock) completely. Is there a .22 ammo that seems to be very consistent in power level, or could it be that I am limp wristing a rifle?

Try some of the CCI ammo. You can either start with Mini-Mag and work up to the Stingers/Velocitors if those don't work or you can try Stingers/Velocitors first and if those work fine, try the Mini-Mags. I would probably try a box of Stingers first and if that works, your thoughts about power are probably right. If it doesn't, I'd check for other problems.

If this is the 552 Speedmaster, it is made to cycle .22 shorts. So you should not be having problems with any LR, except maybe Aquila Super Colibri's.

I would say first to make sure the action is clean. Also verify that the chamber is clean too. Sometimes a dirty chamber can really mess up a semi auto.

After that I would look at your recoil spring and make sure it is not weak or broken. If the action cycles too fast you can get a situation were the hammer will not reset. This is true also if the spring is too strong, not allowing the hammer too cock in the first place.

Let us know what you find.

The carbon in your "blowback" action is probably causing the problem. Check the action...spray some wd-40 or CLR in there till its running out all over the place...it will probably be black...keep going until it's not so black! Then work the action again it's probably a lot easier to cycle now!

All good choices.
Federal and CCI introduced cartridges specifically loaded for use in semi auto .22 rifles last year. I have been having good luck with the Federals in a Winchester Model 63.

No it is chambered for lr. Action looks good and it seems to cycle fine the last time I shot match grade ammo. I recently was at the range with a walmart brick of remington and it would not cycle every 10 or so shots.

Remington bulk 22 is very unreliable ammo IMO. I had a couple of boxes that had similar issues. Shoot CCI MiniMags!

you should soak it and clean it real good. the speedmaster is supposed to work with even shorts, and mine does, and very reliably. So if yours is having trouble, with regular 22lr's, then you need a good cleaning, first. if this still doesn't do it, you got some probs.

My 10/22 loves the CCI standard velocity actually. I shoot way better groups with that than with the high velocity rounds they make, and it cycles just fine. Too bad the standard velocity rounds seem to be more expensive than the high.

First thing I would do is clean the rifle completely of all powder residue. Strip it as much as you are willing to do and clean clean clean. Next buy some CCI 22LR high velocity ammo and try it out.

As was stated, your rifle was designed to shoot shorts, longs, and long rifle 22's. If you still have a problem, take it to a gunsmith and have him/her go over it thoroughly. You may want to do this anyway. I plan on taking an old Mossberg to a gunsmith in the near future just to have them really go over it carefully. Guns that don't function have no place in my home (excluding special collector stuff, of course).

DO NOT USE WD-40 ON YOUR GUNS!!!!!!! WD-40 will harden and will gum up the actions and any moveing parts!! :banghead:

I've used WD-40 as a cleaner and rust preventative and have never had any of problems in 20+years. But I also properly lube my firearms with gun oil, grease, CLP etc etc.

WD-40 has not caused any of the issues you describe when being used as a cleaner and rust preventative! :neener:

I keep hearing people talk about how unreliable Remington 22 ammo is. (I'm assuming you're talking about the Thunderbolt ammo in the green box) If that is the ammo you're talking about, that's almost all I've put through my 10/22 without a single solitary problem. In fact, I've put probably several hundred, if not a thousand rounds through my 10/22 (mostly Thunderbolt, some Federal) without a problem. No stovepipes, no misfires, no hangfires, no failures to feeed/eject, NOTHING. Maybe my 10/22 is some kinda supergun. :neener:

What was the Match Ammo you mentioned that you previously shot? (Post # 15). Some brands/styles of "match" ammo have a very waxy bullet-coating (Wolfe Match Extra comes to mind). Some of that stuff is so gummy that my fingers can barely open & close after loading it all day. It'll do the same thing to your chamber. Now, the non-Match ammo you're trying to shoot has enough power to P-U-L-L itself & eject out of the sticky chamber, but not with enough gusto to then P-U-S-H back the bolt & spring to re-cock the gun. Give your chamber an especially good scrubbing. It might do the trick.
