I love my town. But it's extremely aggravating politics make me shake my head... that being said, remember boys and girls, that California is a big state and that SF and LA (even thought they get most of the face time) ar not the only regions of Cali that matter.

Sheriff OKs hundreds of gun permits

UKIAH, Calif. (AP) -- More than 1,000 Mendocino County residents are licensed to carry guns in public, a fivefold increase since Sheriff Tony Craver was elected promising to expand the availability of concealed weapons permits to law-abiding citizens.
"It's their right," said Craver, who became sheriff in 1999. "If I can empower people to protect themselves, then I've partially achieved the government's responsibility to protect its people."

The number of Mendocino County residents with concealed weapon permits has increased to 1,065 from 217 in 1998. Just 136 residents of neighboring Sonoma County and 197 in Lake County have concealed weapons permits.

"That's a staggering amount of gun permits for a small county," said retired Mendocino County sheriff Jim Tuso, who limited the number of permits issued during his eight-year tenure. "I don't know why that many people would want to carry a weapon in Mendocino County."

Permit-seekers must meet state requirements to carry a concealed weapon but various counties interpret the law differently and sheriffs often have the final say in how many permits the county issues.

Mendocino County was ranked 16th of California's 58 counties for rate of concealed weapons permits in 2002, the most recent data available. The state Justice Department said the county had 10 permits per 1,000 residents, compared to Modoc County, which had the highest rate at 36 per 1,000 residents.

Maybe they figured out that Mr. Tuso couldn't protect them.

Smoke

Carver rocks. If I need to lease a place in Mendocino to get my permit, so be it.

I mean, this guy REALLY gets it! Roumor has it he teaches (or at least did for some time) the required CCW course *himself*. He's that involved.

And this is CA people. Less than 100 miles from San Francisco. (not far in CA.)

So I don't live anywhere near California nor do i know the laws so this may be a dumb question but what qualifies you to get a permit from one county. Residence? Owning land, and if so how much?

Good Post...

Where can we find a county by county accounting of how many CCW's are issued?

Los Angeles needs to be liberated or seceded from CA and returned to Mexico. SF Bay Area needs to be detached and given statehood. We'll call it Rags 'n Riches as homes are overpriced and the homeless overflowing.

That's one of the dumbest things I've heard in a while.
Putting aside the fact that you never know what could happen and where, most people I know do occasionally leave their home county.

:barf:

And a big hoo rah for Sheriff Craver. I wish we had more like him.:D
