My buddy James and I made a hunt this morning, we ended up the day with six of them. Five boars and one sow. The first boar of the morning, the largest one on the truck, just about took my Sasha dog out of the hunt for good. She was baying him real tight in a thick spot and he made a rush at her and gave her about a 5" throat gash that was bleeding pretty hard when I got there, but she was still baying like a champ. After some rough time finding the hog to get a shot at him, we got him killed. I took off my longsleeve shirt and made a field expediant pressure bandage and had the bleeding stopped before James got close to me with the pick-up. She's outside now eating food and sleeping on some blankets, with her head and neck wrapped in bright pink vet wrap pressure bandage.

We left her in the box under lots of protest barking(she really wanted to go again) and managed to crank out five more with James dog Ginger, who was hunting WIA, she caught a tooth in the back leg on the first boar this morning.

YOU HAVE GOT BE KIDDING RIGHT????

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard off..

WHAT IS THIS COUNTRY COMMING TO???

St Gunners tag line says it all..

Get the darn black flag out NOW BEFORE it's to late.

You kiddin, I live in Kali. They would have the SWAT teams deployed, Sheriff's TAC units and liberals shaking fists at you.

You would be cuffed and gagged before they figured out it was pigs blood.

Got a friend looking at a lease this week that is supposed to have lots of hogs somewhere around Tyler so when I was in Sportsman's Warehouse yesterday a noticed a Winchester Trapper carbine in 45 Colt.
In the back if my mind I'm thinking " Wonder if that might not make a good little hog gun?"
Further in the back of my mind I was running "St. Gunner-The Movie" which is composed of all these pig pics strung together :D.

Hope the dog is AOK.

Yep you get pulled over for that here also, but only cause the LEO wants to know if you are giving any of them away and if so can he have one... :D

Yep they deploy Swat teams here, cept they send em up in the helos and machine gun the hogs...

Man this is Texas, it doesn't phase anyone. I drive in to pick-up my little girl from daycare and the teachers pull the kids out for show and tell when I have hogs on the box. I swear I don't think it would be pretty if I lived in Cali or Seattle; I have little tolerance for people attempting to set the standards by which I live, I have even less for those who attempt to enforce those standards upon me. I guess I am just a bad person, but a good citizen.

P95,

The first hog about a 115lb boar took a 1 oz slug to the buttocks at about 2yds, he broke out of the bush he was in and caught a 350gr Hornady HP from a 45/70 in the chest at about 2yds. Then my stupid dog grabbed him cause he was still trying to get away and James stabbed him a couple times in the heart. The slug shot exited, but was at a steep angle, it went in the top of the left hip and exited lower right ham. The 45/70 went low and broke the sternum and every rib along the lower chest.

2nd was double shoulder shot with a slug at 20yds, it was DRT
3rd was out of a bay at 7yds through both shoulders it was DRT
4th was a 5yd shot out of a bay through the neck with a slug DRT
5th was a 350gr HP from a 45/70 at 5yds through the chest missing shoulders, the hog broke and ran and I implanted a 1 oz slug into him at about 12yds, hit him at the last rib and it exited out the chest in front, he just rolled over. The 45/70 was lethal but I didn't see blood on him.
The 6th was an AR-15 and 55gr softpoints from Winchester. I made a series of crappy shots, managed to hit him 5 times in the guts and once low in the front leg on the run, tracked him down, missed him at 10yds with a slug when he broke out of a bush. Tracked him some more and killed him with a double shoulder shot at about 7yds.

My synapsis, the AR sucks in the brush, I was shooting at a hog running through prickley pear cactus. I had hit him once or twice and he got into the thick stuff. I just pulled the rifle in front of him about 15' and emptied a 30rd magazine into the cactus there, just chopped a hole through it where he was fixin to cross. It worked cause I hit him a few more times. It sure wasn't pretty though.

I turned around to look at James and he sorta looked like this...

I have some better bullets for hogs in the AR but in that pasture and a few others I use the 55's cause they explode pretty good on impact. A few cows and such are there and I don't want to shoot a really hard bullet to lessen the chance of a richochet.

The 1oz slugs seem to be the ticket for most, I really am impressed and its changed my carry preference for loads in my scattergun in the truck. It is one 3" OOO buck followed slugs. When I go to the hog woods I pop the buck and just use slugs. I won't use buck on a hog anymore.

The dog seems to be doing ok, I have to drain the blood out of the cut later today to keep the swelling down. I just keep pumping her full of feed, topped with warm water and mixed with red cell for the iron she is missing to help replenish the blood supply asap so she can fight infection better. I'll go pick-up some oral antibiotics in the morning at the vet and start her on those. I let her out this morning and she ran around a bit.

Steve - excellent ballistics de-briefing :) Much appreciate your time typing all that out... thank you.

So - does seem overall you are usually in pretty close. Does seem too, 55 grainers outa .223 not the best thing since sliced bread. Slug very impressive - I guess only slight downside might be, they tend to be a tad ''punishing'' to shoot!!

Interesting re the 45-70 .... I wish to heck I had the opportunity to use my BFR on these critters ... my current 45-70 load is 41.5 grains Reloader7 shoving a Lasercast 405 grain flat head. These develop about 1550 ft lbs and I think would be the dog's dangly thingies on this sorta work.

Guess I'll just have to check em on Groundhogs!

Keep up the good work ;)

Dude, I'm not to sure about Kent, but out in Enumclaw when a cop sees you driving around with fresh killed game, you will probably have a conversation with him or her about ammo, calibers, the range you shot it at, and if you are REALLY going to eat ALL that fresh venison, or could you MAYBE just throw some toward the starving-for-game-police officer's fund (that is, until they go out themselves on their off days, tag a HUGE elk, and bring it back to show it off right outside the AM/PM and the Safeway).

As for my Dept--hey, you should see some of the game and the salmon that the Tribal members pull out of the water and the woods up here! If you can, keep your eyes open for the Puyallup Indians First Salmon ceremony. Or, come to our pow-wow later on this year. You will be STUFFED with salmon! Guaranteed!
