maybe i need a shrink but i think the thr members will do. i have been fooled over many years into believing that duplicate weapons and or more weapons,
i.e: handguns, black rifles, hunting rifles, etc. will give the owner more physical
and mental security or less? i'm still a gun nut and the usmc taught me how to
use them accordingly but even with the world situation and political climate,
i just think a smaller, well defined and all around collection makes more sense.
need thoughts and observations........maybe i should take up knitting.......

Whatever floats your boat. It doesn't make much difference how many guns you've got, but how aware you are and how well you can use 'em.

Depends.
Do you own the guns you have ONLY for security?
I know that I don't. I have guns that I like to shoot, I have guns that I like to shoot and have a history, I have guns that I like to shoot and use for security.
Then I have guns that I just like to shoot.
I have 3 M1903's. I have 3 M1 Garands. I have about 7 1911's (one is a M1911, another is a repro M1911).
I shoot them, I clean then, I shoot them again.
More security? Naw, a single pistol and maybe my SKS is all I EXPECT to ever need for security, but I like guns (and shooting, did I mention shooting them).

Who fooled you into thinking that? Did you fool yourself?

I don't remember ever hearing that from anyone honestly.

In fact I've always kept in mind the old saying

Beware the man that only owns one gun; he probably knows how to use it

One is none, two is one.
I believe in having backups, but loading your self down with all kinds of firearms will not increase your safety - you only have two trigger fingers! Unless you are planning on arming the neighborhood in case the SHTF, then buying a case of SKSs or AR15 is just going to make you popular with your local FFL.

People have often said that more law abiding citizens owning guns would help reduce crime or lead to that end. There is no guarantee of personal safety with more guns. That is all up to you, your ability, your decisions, and your mindset.

IMO, safety is a state of mind. If you are proficient with your weapon, be it 1, 2 or 20 of them, then you are creating your own safe enviornment.

*shrugs* Guns are just pieces of metal, wood, and plastic. By themselves, they do little to add to your safety (they make decent doorstops, though).

Having but a single (or a small number) gun and the training and skill to use it properly in various situations is far more useful. Indeed, I'd go as far as saying that having NO gun and good training is probably better than having lots of guns and no training.

I'm in the same boat as you are. Every 30 days on the dot I purchase a new gun. I sometimes pick up used guns so I don't have to wait that long. I am also hoarding ammo by the K's of rounds. And it's not zombies I'm worried about.

Safety? From what?

If you want to defend your rights, own a gun or two.

If you want to be safe from crime, develop the local economy any way you can.

If you want be safe from natural disasters, work up preparation plans, shelters as appripriate and any other infrastructure improvements as per your climate and location.

Jobs fight crime better on a large scale better than guns, owning guns and having some practice and situational awareness means you are a far more risky target than most criminals would want to face. (notice guns was just once piece of that equation. practice with the gun and awareness of what is going on around you...)

She never blinks

True. But back to Ted Kennedy. Yes he's fat, but zombies eat brains right?

Anyone know the calories in a typical brain?
Maybe he's just eating more than his fair share.

And we've drifted so far off topic now.... apologies, but it's funny :neener:

They are just tools.

You got just one Screwdriver? One frying pan? One knife? Probably not. Different tools for different jobs.

A gourmet can make a few ingredients and a scrungy old cast iron pan sing so well you'd swear you'd died and gone to heaven. While a hack can have a 4 star kitchen at his disposal and make dog food for only the least discriminating dogs.

Get your tools. Get your training. Then, Grasshopper, may you watch TV in peace.

All else being equal, having a firearm and knowing how to use it do increase your security over not having one/not knowing how to use it.

IMHO, having both a handgun and a rifle allow you more flexibility depending on the situation (I'd rather have a rifle, but in many environments your options are a handgun or nothing). Having a very small handgun in addition to a larger handgun give you some additional flexibility.

Having ten variants of handgun, ten variants of carbine, ten variants of highpower rifle, and ten variants of shotgun do not increase your security one iota over having an example of each. But collecting and shooting them can be fun.

More guns does not equal less crime. It is the mindset of a law-abiding armed population that reduces crime and violence.

Give every thug in LA's south central a 9mm and see what happens.

Give the peaceful citizens of any normal community all guns and watch home invasions and muggings plunge.

Safety vs Security

Under most scenarios that I can envision, the "safety" part can be accomplished with three distinct weapons.

Security, on the other hand, encompasses stuff like being able to eat, sleep, and so on. That adds another three.

Given one of each for Personal/Home/Community defense and one of each for the major categories of vittles acquisition, the "need" argument gets us to maybe six.

Unless you also enjoy the sport, in which case add another couple or three.

If one begins to feel "guilty" about his "personal arsenal" a tour of a few garages in your local area would probably yield:
  • some guy with six sets of golf clubs and hundreds of golf balls,
  • some guy with two dozen fishing rods, a hundred lures, and two hundred flies,
  • some guy with six or seven bowling balls,
  • some guy with four cars and no kids,
  • some guy with sixteen sets of darts and four dart boards,
  • some guy with four baseball gloves, fifty baseballs, and nine bats,
  • some guy with [insert huge unneeded collection here].
And I haven't even touched on boating, biking, rock climbing, and all that.

Abundance is not a crime, but the foundation of survival.

Back to safety: from your vast and uncounted collection, choose the three that fit best and become unspeakably expert with them. Get good with the tools of hunting.

Enjoy the rest.

Go in peace.

I've got plenty of guns, but I can think of several more I "need" right now. Safety isn't owning more guns (tho I will take that as a excuse), safety is more gun owners.

More guns does not equate to saftey. If the SHTF then all i'll probably need will be my 1911, the AR and a 22. The rest of them will probably go to family members that don't understand my gun buying........;)
