I took my new Mosin out and the mag holds the rounds in fine when not firing, but the recoil opens the mag catch on the baseplate. Nothing looks like it is out of sorts. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steve

This same thing has happened to me a number of times. I believe that I fixed it though.

I simply took a flat head and bent the catch in the baseplate in a bit so that it was tighter. It didn't damage it in any way. I have not fired it since, but it seems and feels tighter to me. I guess we'll see he next time I shoot it. I believe that it worked fine though.

Those old rifles made with mis matched parts like magazine covers and latches , sometimes need a little tweeking.
Not a big issue.

Thus why Russians had the height of weapon engineering.
"The best design isn't when there's nothing left to add, it's when there's nothing left take off."
Everything can be fixed with a screwdriver, hammer and a file.
Just bend the catch a bit.

This is the opposite of my situation. On my Mosin (Russian) 91/30 rifie and my Maosin (Chinese) Type 53 carbine, the catches are a bear to release when I want to dump rounds from the magazine w/o working them through the action. As I recall the releases look like they could get pinched to where they do not engage fully, but mine have plenty of engagement.

I bent the catch so now the fit is tighter but now when I load the mag the bolt won't push the first round into the chamber. The first round is stuck :(

The catch itself really can't effect that.
Sounds like rimlock to me. Make sure the rim of the top round is in front of the rim of the one below it.
The first round is the only round actually affected by it in mine, IME.
