Mosin 91/59 SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Picked up a Pristine 91/59 at my local gun shop yesterday. Got it for $135 out the door!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish I had gotten it in time for Easter Egg hunting.

The bore picture is done with a point and shoot sony camera. I turned off the flash and put a muted bore light in the breech. You just have to play with the lighting to get it to work.

The scout rifle you mentioned will shoot a 1.5 inch group at 100yds with 180 gr soft points.....I use it for deer hunting.

Nice find. The 91/59 is my favorite non-Finn Mosin.

I got three of those from AIM. Gave one away to my nephew, but still have two. I'm glad I kept them.

So everyone who owns a mosin is cheap because they are looking for an inexpensive rifle? I know a guy who has more Mosins than you can shake a stick at, i guess he's cheap for having a low cost rifle. Maybe you didn't mean it that way. Anyway i can shoot my mosin for a fourth the cost you or others can shoot your modern rifles, not including the incredible low price of buying the mosin right off the bat. I probably have more fun too...

well, my sks is cheaper than my mosin to shoot, but the mosin is sure a lot more fun, sore shoulder and all.

I like the sks, and I love the ak, but I never cared for the nagant.

Probably because when I first shot a nagant I already owned many modern bolt rifles.

I probably expected to much out of the nagant. The one I shot was probably a crappy nagant. It shot almost 3 inch groups at 100yards, the trigger pull was crap, and you dang near had to cycle it with a 2x4.

If thats non typical let me know, but if that is the average I don't think I would ever buy one.

For a good condition Nagant using lacquer-coated surplus ammo.

The sticky bolt is usually a result of lacquer cooking out of hot cases and transferring to the chamber walls. A 20 gauge bronze brush chucked into a cordless drill and some solvent works wonders.

The triggers suck. With careful polishing of their (very few) parts, they can be smoothed quite a bit, and you can lighten the pull with snips and a beer can, but it'll never be a great trigger.

3" at 100 yards with Mosin sights and surplus ammo is actually pretty good. With good ammo and a scope, that's a 1.5 inch rifle... not bad for a 120 year old design that can also double as a fencepost or an oar.

Mosin recoil sucks. The guns kick far harder than anything of their weight and power has any right to. I expect that it's mostly due to the "ergonomics" of the "who in hell did they design this thing for??" stock. I don't know anyone who the Mosin stock actually fits. In a stock designed for humans, rather than lawn gnomes in wool trenchcoats, I expect it'd be much better.

Oh, and did I mention...

I like mine.

tube_ee called it. The recoil is because of the stock design. It's like it's cut out of a 2X4. With the straight stock all of the recoil goes straight into your shoulder. My scout rifle with the Monte Carlo style stock absorbs a lot more recoil as the curve in the stock diverts the recoil down 2 vectors instead of 1. There will be more muzzle rise, but less straight into your shoulder recoil.
Personally I really enjoy shooting my Mosins, recoil and all. The neighbors usually think I've got a cannon out......

all you have to do to reduce the poundage of the mosin trigger is cut a few shims. i have done this to mine, its fast and easy. you can also do a lil shaping, shaving, etc, but i feel thats a little too much work and too easy to fu*k up a rifle.

as for recoil, either suck it up or get a slip on buttpad. of all my rifles i think the mosin is the best cause it has functioned through all conditions, many of them more severe than most people have seen, and they still performed with no problems...
simplicity in function.
