I finally got some time to shoot my Mosin at more than 50 yards. My father-in-law has some property in Tennessee and we set up a range out to 300 yards. At 100 yards with iron sights I was hitting 2 liter soda bottles filled with water. Then I got ambitious and moved out to 300 yards. Not so good.... I was close, but not able to hit the 2 liters. Next time I am going to bring some big cardboard squares to shoot at distance. Had a blast and cannot wait to go back out. I was shooting surplus ammo and was pretty happy with everything. We are going to build two benches next week. We were leaning on a fence post today.

try to find ammo between 170 and 185 grains, the real sweet spot for these. you will see they will be much more accurate, and you will hit that bottle, guaranteed! Even the 200 and 205 grainers, have even better accuracy, but your rear elevator will be off, so put it on 350 yds; or even 400, and shoot a bit low, and pull the trigger, if you get some of those.

when they went to find a target weight, the designers found these weights to be near ideal, i think they settled on 172, 175, or 180's. They also found out, that they increased their volley fire range, from 2000m to 2300m, when switching to this round.

New Mosin owner here also. Does the above quote also apply to the M44? I am looking to buy some surplus 7.62 x 54 ammo and trying to decide which to purchase. I haven't yet shot my rifle but it will be shot tomorrow with the 150 grain Light Ball.

I shot some 147 grn Czech stuff and some Silver bear that was 174 grn I think. There was a noticeable difference in the 2 bullet weights/powders. My shoulder is a little sore this morning, but I think I will be able to suffer through it. Benches will help out tho.

First time I ever saw any serious shooting for distance (i.e. more than 200 yards) was a guy shooting a Garand at 450 yard gongs. After hearing the shot, the slight whistle of the projectile, and the smack of the bullet against the gong, I was hooked. When I had the chance to get a replica M91/30 sniper, I snatched it up and wasn't disappointed.

I'm proud to say I was eventually able to tag that gong regularly, even in a high wind. Shooting a Mosin Nagant doesn't really get fun until 300+ yards, IMO.

I miss that gun, and that range. :(

Good fun! Unfortunately as you found the iron sights are crude and IMO none are target rifles. Unless you are willing to relaod and find a bullet the rifle likes it may never be as accurate as you'd like it to be. Slugging the bore is a good start to finding the right bullet dia.

what type of ammo has given you guys the best results at 600+ yards?
im just wondering because im getting my side mount from kalinka optics mounted soon and wanted to know what will work best at long range

There's a guy on youtube shooting his mosin at 600+ and he uses a 200 grain Sierra match king and H4350 powder, if I remember correctly. You can find the video easily...
