Mosin Gunsmith (project idea)

I'm toying with a idea.

I have a mosin I sporterized, it shoots like crap. I also have a 30" 1-12 twist 308 barrel from a factory savage F-class rifle just sitting in the safe(round count between 1000-1500). Barrel agg.ed around 4.5" - 5 shot groups at 600 yards on a savage action.

So I'm thinking it would be cool to get that barrel re-chambered in 7.62x54r and a fresh crown,(maybie add a muzzle break) and install into that mosin action.

I can modify one of the stocks I have around the house to work with the action and new barrel. I'd probably make it heavy for bench shooting only. I have one of those ugly ez-pull trigger things laying around some where. That might get the trigger down to a reasonable level for target shooting.

I'd probably then get some Lapua brass and some good heavy target bullets and work up a load for it.

The only money I'd really need to invest in this project is the gunsmithing and the brass/dies. So what do you think? Big waste of time? Or might it be a shooter? Any recomendations on where to send the gun for the barrel work would be great. What do you think that will set me back?

I wouldn't do it personally, but if you think you'd like it then that's all that really matters. I would warn you, though, to reload or be careful to only fire .308" bullets if you purchase factory ammo. Russian .30 cal is not the same as US .30cal. Theirs are fatter. You may already know that, but better safe than sorry.

Yeah I thought about the ammo thing. Which I'd reload for it anyway to try to get some accuracy out of it.

I think it would be fun to play with, the big question in my head really would be will it be fun enough to justify the expense. It would really suck to do all the work and spend the money and it will probably still be a average shooter at best. And I think that's how it would go.
