Because I am too lazy to wade through 4700 past threads on a search, somebody tell me where to find out what all the little "bugs" on my M44 indicate.

It has a Hammer and Sickle surrounded by a laurals near the "top" of the chamber area and numerous stylized very short arrows in ovals (not as pretty as the prewar Tula marks but a simple arrow head over a flettching sort of thing with no details), and interupted diamonds as well as letters such as a cyllric looking y in side a circle and others in interrupted diamonds and next to what appear to be check marks bearing a strong resemblance to one of the inerupted diamons even further poorly stamped.

Without dissasembly I have found a complete serial number on the magazine floor plate and partial matching numbers on the reciever ring ans elsewhere. Unfortunatly the bolt does not match though all stat with AA or something cyllic looking like flat topped A's.

Should I be looking for a date code or actuall number and if so where? I hope I do not bugger anything up pulling off the wood after 17 years!

Well markings on Mosins is a neat subject, in that we know alot of the markings, but there are alot we don't know.

Okay I will run down what I do know from what you are saying--

The Hammer/sickle with laurels is definately the mark of the Izhevsk arsenal, the arrow inside the triangle is also the mark of Izzys. on some of the lesser parts (bolt, magazine floorplate, etc..) you will see this as a arrow inside a bow

The various small bisected diamonds (usually with a number inside) as well as small ovals with numbers inside are various acceptance stamps from workers as it was being built. You will find tons of them around the receiver, barrel shank, and barrel itself.

The cyrillic Y inside an oval is a black powder proof.

The date code is on the top of the barrel shank, at the front of the receiver.

Here is the site of all sites with detailed pictures that will help you figure out what other markings you have--
