I wanted to see if I could get more accuracy out of my 1939 91/30. I didn't want to destroy any part but I felt like working on it. There are some great aftermarket vendors out there for Mosins. Here's what I did.
1. I got the ATI Monte Carlo Stock. I wanted to put in a Timney Trigger and I didn't want to wreck my wood stock. The ATI Stock is tough as heck. You need a Dremel with cutter heads. There is a lot of trimming required just to fit the rifle in the fiberglass stock, nevermind cutting out for the Timney. Don't try sanding unless you are very young. I think you MUST bed the stock......otherwise the fit seems like it rattles. I used JB Weld. Grease the barrel. I do a little at a time......clean the grease off the cured epoxy with mineral spirits...then I put a little more on until it feels solid. I never have the guts to get the JB Weld too close to the threads on the recoil lug. It's easy to make it fit solid and tight this way. I bed the front of the stock, too.
2. Timney Trigger. Wow! What a difference from the 91/30 Mosin. I had to shim the screw to make it work? Don't know why but I had to make a shim out of a washer to get it tight and working right. Used Blue Locktite on the screw. The SAFETY works nice. (I now have a Mosin with two working safety mechanisms). I wouldn't bother changing the trigger on my M39's. They're nice. The 91/30's was like dragging an anchor over a rocky bottom.
3. MOJO Rear Sight. GREAT! Previously, I had to have a piece of wire insulation on the front sight to get the 91/30 to shoot lower. That made the front sight too fat. Now it shoots to 50-yards no problem. Use a small C-Clamp to press down on blade spring to remove the original sight.
4. I bought a Cocking Piece with a Ring to set the safety & a Bent Bolt just for the heck of it. Both are nice workmanship from the vendors.
5. AMMO - Silver Bear shoots the best of all I've tried in this Mosin. Brown Bear shoots in another zip code. My Reloads with Herter .312 bullets aren't too bad. Bulgarian Surplus isn't bad, either.
6. Barrel - I used Bore Polish and tried to smooth out the lumps. The bore is dark but not pitch black.....the lands are very rounded. The crown is pretty nice. But I've seen worst.
Results - Given I have 59-year old eyes on a cloudy day! Not bad for a 1939 Russian Rifle IMO. I'm sure a better shooter would do better but for me.....not bad. Plus, I had fun.
