Mosin Nagant Trigger Problem

Hi Folks,

I got a nice MN yesterday and had a great time at the range putting down nice targeted groups at 60 feet, unsupported position, with no elevation or windage adjustments! What luck.

Anyhow, I took my new MN home for a nice cleaning and with it back together, the trigger doesn't have any tension.

I have searched thoroughly and the leading trigger problem is a missing trigger pin. My trigger pin is in place and the sear spring appears to be fine.

I am at a complete loss. The bolt appears to be assembled correctly and I can manually cycle the bolt without issue. The trigger is totally limp, except for the last 3% of trigger pull when it presses against the sear spring.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Thanks much,
Winston

the trigger spring bolt stop should be just under the trigger almost touching. u should be able to push the trigger forward about a .25 of an inch without any touching anything then pull back the same amount and it should be in contact with the trigger spring.if not trigger spring could be broke or screw is loose holding spring.trigger needs spring pressure until the striker hits the primer. hopes this helps numrich has parts diagram on web sight and springs.

Hmmm... Is there supposed to be a little coiled spring on the trigger pin? I have seen that online but I thought it was a modification and don't see it on the diagrams.

If not for said coiled spring, what provides tension to keep the trigger forward? I have no tension and it won't release the firing mechanism.

Thanks for the replies,
Winston

Do these photos reveal anything?
Thanks,

ok, I think I just need to tweak my trigger assembly a little bit. I got it to dry fire once by applying a bit of manual pressure in order to increase pressure from the bolt lock to the bolt.

I still don't understand why I had a nice smooth trigger action before. When the safety was on, the trigger had continuous light spring tension. Now, there is no such tension.

Thanks Folks,
Winston

Did the trigger pin fall out?
It is don't held in by force and will fall out very easy.
Try to remove the bolt. If you are unable to remove the bolt by pulling the trigger you will have to pull down on the trigger to lower the sear.

I think I see the pin there. Check the screw tightness on the spring screw. If you don't tighten it down the whole assembly flops around.

looks to me the spring is bent down too much. spring should be in contact with frame with bolt removed and have a small gap with bolt in.

Most all the Combloc MN had sloppy triggers. The Finns on a couple models installed a mousetrap spring to keep trigger from flopping around. Then with the Model 39 installed two pins in the trigger to engage the sear for an easier let off. I think there are some people who still sell the mousetrap springs.

And now I will post the infamous Finn trigger sketches. Pay close attention to how the sear and the trigger work on each other. That should help you get it adjusted to where you want it. And one more thing; if you do remove material like it shows in the shaded areas, only take off a little at a time and constantly check for fit. Nothing worse than going too far and having to order new parts or building it back up.

I have used these to tune a few MN triggers, and they are very nice now.

As Mooky stated the Timney trigger is the way to go If you really like the rifle I installed one day and night feels and shoots like a new gun just love it.
If you go that route you will need a dremmel to clear out a spot in the stock not a big deal but not a bolt in and shoot.

Here's a link to the defunct Surplus Rifles site files, saved in pdf file format.
Scan down the list and select Mosin 189130 disassembly pdf. Of course you'll need Adobe reader to open. It may help with the pictorial layout shown.

The two M44 rifles that I have, do not have floppy triggers as you describe. The flat spring should hold the trigger in position.
