I bought a Mosin Nagant, because the price was right and the amo was 20 cents a round. I need to learn how to shoot a long gun incase the SHTF does happen. I will be bugging in.
What are some things that I could find online to help me learn to shoot better?

I bought a Mosin about a month ago and it was my first rifle. Ultimately, no amount of theory that you read will make you a better shooter, only practice will.

Spend a few minutes reading the basics such as trigger control, and basic handling. Then go out to the range and have fun.

Make sure you find a range that allows you to shoot 'magnetic' ammo, which is any ammo with a steel core or jacket. Surplus ammo will be magnetic.

Most ranges around here do not allow it. There's only one by me that does and they only let you onto the 50 yard range. Otherwise, I have to drive a bit to shoot.

On line you should be able to find some dummy "snap caps" rounds. With these you can practice loading, sighting and trigger control.

Learn how to field strip your M-N and clean it well. You'll need to clean the chamber very well. More than likely it will have ages of dried preservatives in it and when shooting milsurp ammo you'll get hard extraction from fired casings. This can be discouraging to a new shooter.

If you completely strip it down be careful not to loose the trigger pivot pin. Sometimes these are loose fitting and just rolling the barrel action on its side will cause the pin to fall out. Mine will do that and I know of others that will do that too.

Enjoy it!

Welcome to The High Road Dohenypark.

There is a lot of information out there, and I would think if you created a new thread with the title something along the lines 'resources for better rifle shooting' you will get a lot of links and responses.

I love the Mosin Nagants, remember though that almost all ammunition for that caliber (7.62x54r) is corrosive and you should thoroughly clean the barrel/action after a day of shooting (even if you only shoot a few rounds out of it). Barrels will be ruined pretty quickly if this isn't done. You can get a rifle cleaning kit at pretty much any gunshop/walmart and most people use a solvent of sort to clean the barrel. Some buy Windex with ammonia in it and use that.

Good luck, remember the safety rules and if you have any other questions the search function on this site will bring up lots of commonly asked questions.

Hey Doug,

welcome to the highroad! I too camre here as a new shooter and its been hands down the best resource on the internet.

Do you have any friends that are into shooting/guns? I would check there first and see if someone will go to the range with you and give you some pointers.

Keep in mind that sometimes the Nagants can be not all that accurate. If you are shooting rough with it, try shooting it with the bayonet on too and see if that helps.

My first gun was an sks and i practiced shooting it at 25 yards when i first started out and moved backwards from there once i got better.

Also investing in a cheap 22LR rifle might be a good, inexpensive way to practice shooting a rifle and it is great for learning the fundamentals.

A used Marlin model 60 or ruger 10/22 will usually be in the same price range as a mosin nagant. I paid anywhere from 80$ to 120$ for my basic, barebones 22LR rifles. You can even put a cheap scope on it like this which will improve your accuracy.

Ive used those on my 22s and while they are not the end all be all scope, ive never had a problem with them and the price is certainly right!

Hopefully this helps and feel free to message me on here with any questions you have.

I very rarely suggest accessories for anything but...

One of the best purchases I made for my Nagant was an adjustable front sight. You can adjust the original front sight with a drift for windage but not for elevation. My understanding is that these are usually sighted in at about 300 meters. If you are like me and can't even see that far or if your range is like mine (only 100 yards), you are going to be consistently shooting about a foot high.

Here is where I bought mine: It was a little bit of a challenge to get the old one off but the new one looks like an original and fits tight without wandering.

If you wanted something for home defense you probably should have bought something else. The M44 is handier, however the rifles are still intended for long distance shooting. As far as upgrades the Mojo Sights are great and a real good improvement. The sights on these rifles are horrible.
