Where should I buy a Mosin-Nagant, I can find them in a lot of places but which place in your opinion sells the highest quality, best condition Mosin-Nagants. Also, anyone know where I can buy lots o' ammo (7.62x54mmR) will it take Wolf ammo? The Mosin is on my SHTF list and I'd like to have a lot of ammo for it around.

Also, if you have a Mosin-Nagant can you tell me how much kick it has, I'm looking to arm (for an emergency only of course) a family of four with the youngest being 15, will he be able to handle it? He's about average size/strength for his age.

Thanks all.

As far as recoil goes, its not that bad as long as you're used to it. if you're not holding the gun tight on your shoulder, it can hurt a bit, especially with the metal butt plate. But with the price of ammo, it shouldn't be hard to at least get everyone familiar with shooting the gun. You also may want to at least sight in every rifle as they tend to be a bit off from the factory. (Possibly due to the Russian theory of "the bayonet is ALWAYS on the rifle")

As far as buying one, I think pretty much every company buys them from Century, so most of the standard grade Mosins should look pretty much the same. Off the top of my head, Classic Arms and JG Sales always seem to have some in stock.

As far as ammo, there's a good amount of surplus stuff out there, which is probably the best bet if you're going to be stocking up a large quantity to store for a long period of time. Most of it is corrosive, so make sure you clean the rifles well after shooting it. Pretty much any manufacturer will work though (like Wolf) and new manufactured ammo won't be corrosive so you won't have to worry as much about cleaning it immediately.

From what I've seen, SHTF kind of posts aren't really allowed here, but I'm not sure I'd choose a Mosin for SHTF duty. I would try to look for something more akin to the semi auto military rifles. I wouldn't want to be in a Katrina or a rioting situation standing outside my house with a 52" long bolt action rifle...

let's answer this one at time

Where should I buy a Mosin-Nagant?
There are several good sources, both brick and mortal and on-line for Mosin's.

I can find them in a lot of places but which place in your opinion sells the highest quality, best condition Mosin-Nagants??
Good question. Mostly it is looking and finding the gun. I like Southern Ohio Guns or J&G Sales, Sarco.

Surplus Arms and Ammo
J&G Sales
Mosin will run any 7.62x54R

Recoil - solid. easily managed by young boys, Youngest on my M-44 is 10 y/o so far.

I think you are thinking in good terms. but the mosin is a heavy gun at about 8 lbs. For what you want rethink and go to a SKS. Change out the wood to a tapco 4 position stock. It fits almosy anyone.
PM me an i will send you a pic of mine

That ammo is everywhere. Just go to a local gun show. Are you near a Cabela's? They have both the rifle and ammo. chris3

never seen anywhere that has "better ones" you will likely have to pick through to find the one you like.

Standing, Its easy to shoot.
At a bench is where people complain and make horror stories of recoil.

Cheaper than dirt, ammo to go, etc, online is usually cheapest ammo.

My 2 cents is don't purchase via the internet. Instead go lookin.

Prices for a Mosin are fairly consistant since they are all Combat issued. Figure to spend about 120 bucks for a rifle that's come out of a box. Every Mosin I've seen has been Re-arseneld. I would look for tight bolt fit, and good rifle'ing. Take a light, remove the bolt and look down the barrel. I like the fact that all the numbers on mine match, but this isn't really important to you. For me it was an indication that mine hand not been fired all that much( it had solid grooves, and no counterbore ), requireing the examiner to replace a part. But, that's just a total guess on my part, and may bare no relevance to reality.

As for ammo, I keep a minimum of 880 rounds (they come in a tin), I replace the loose ammo that we have once we return from plinking. About the only drawback is that the 7.62x54r ammo doesn't lend itself to easily re-loading.

Dunham's Sports-they sell regular price for $79 and go on sale real often for $69, with all the usual goodies to go with it. My local store has a 10' section of nothing but Mosins most of the time so you can look through and hand pick. When they go on sale they usually go quick but they'll rain check for ya and give you first pick when they come in. Bout the cheapest I've found ammo is at one of the local pawn shops, $3.99 for a box of milsurp I believe...

Rguns has a package for...I wanna say $140 that comes with a Mosin and 440 rounds of ammo. Pretty good deal.

EDIT: Also, I've had some problems with Wolf 54r. Seems to really cause a lot of stickyness in the bolt and has gotten stuck in the chamber once.

Big 5 Sporting Goods has them very often, I've noticed. They're constantly in those little 'monthly sales' ads that you find in your mail, and they have been for years. Usually around $99. My brother got his Mosin as a gift when he was 13 (ten years ago), and loved it.

We expected the recoil to be more than he could handle, so we went out and got a slip-on recoil pad. He literally never used it, not once. Every time I read about "heavy recoil" on a Mosin, I'm completely blown away. That rifle is GENTLE. Especially compared to the Mossberg 500 12ga I got as a gift that same year.

Your son should be able to handle the Mosin just fine. And yes, Wolf ammo runs fine in the rifle. It's all we ever used for the one my brother got.

The reason people complain about MN recoil is they don't shoot them often and their shoulder does not become conditioned to firing the rifle. Besides, they don't kick that bad....chris3

to be honest, for "Home Defense", your first purchase should probably be a good pump shotgun, 12 guage, firing buckshot.

Turn those near misses into hits, and don't endanger the neighbors 3/4 of a mile away. (did you know the stock sights on a Mosin Nagant 91/30 are calibrated out to 2000 meters ... that's like a mile and some change)

Does CmdrSlander only want a lowest-cost, common Russian MN? I've had two MN 44s and a 91/30. Hoping for my Russian 44s (fairly bright bores, decent rifling) to group less than 6" at 50 yards, my Bulgarian ammo did not work out at all and being impatient I sold them.
The 91/30 was better but the long gun was awkward carrying under/between tree branches.

Even though I've never had a Finnish Mosin, i.e. M-27, the various true, original Finns are always reported to be the best MNs as they are the more accurate, and therefore seem to be the primary collector series.

You must have read something about the Winter War in 1940, where the Finns mostly defeated the far superior numbers of Soviet troops.
Both side had the same basic rifles.

If CmdrSlander does not mind the higher prices, these might be worth it.
