So I got a pack of stripper clips in the mail today and tried it out, loading them, inserting, cycling. The first 3 times I got what I can only imagine is "rimlock", and couldn't close the bolt on the first round. How can I avoid this?

Make sure theyre not in rimlock in the stripper.

Make sure they all point UP in the stripper as you put them in (they should form the shape of the magazine)

Grab the top round and use it as a fulcrum to push the ones beneath it into the magazine.

Send that bolt home and get back to slaying bodies.

Also there is an interruptor that's part of the ejector assembly. On many Mosins I have had to replace this because it's worn out. Very cheap part to replace, takes ten minutes to fix. Put a fresh one in there and it should help hold down the stack of magazine rounds. With a good interrupter you should have fewer problems, though rimlock can still show up with certain types of ammo your mag doesn't like.

I would also check the stripper clips to insure the rim of the cartridge above is in front of the cartridge below it. The 7.62X54 is a rimmed cartride design and if you don't put the rounds in the stripper right, it's going to jam, because the rim of the cartridge right below it will hold it back because its rim will grab the one you are trying to feed into the chamber. Check it out. But it's a rather common mistake until you get the hang of it.

ok so i need to load them so the rims are like this? (the space not quite so pronounced obviously)

You shouldn't HAVE to do ANYTHING special like stacking them or lifting the top round in the clip or ANYTHING.

The problem is in the interuptor-ejector on your RIFLE....it is what holds the #2 round down while the top round is chambered..

If it does what you are doing I tear the rifle down and inspect it. I PURPOSELY load the rim BEHIND each other when I test a rifle. It should chamber them fine. Remember to use FORCE when closing the bolt..this isn't some civvie Remchester with positive feed...it's a Mosin and you should use your gorilla arm to close the bolt...

Remember to use FORCE when closing the bolt

Yeah, I'll admit that I kind of backed off when I couldn't close the bolt easily. I guess if I slam it, the force will life the round's rim over the next one? The only problem I have is closing the bolt on the top-most round. All the other cycle.
