My buddy bought a Mosin Nagant 91/30 from Cabelas a week ago and he noticed that when cycling rounds there was little brass shavings in the receiver right before the breech. When inspecting the shells, it was noticeable that there was long shave marks around the entire case. Any suggestions? Is this normal? We will be going back to the range wednesday

From what I have seen on many Mosins is the Bottom metal, ( Magazine box ) is setting too high in the stock.
There is a horseshoe shaped guide extension on the front of the magazine to act as a Guide ramp into the chamber.
If that is setting too high, it causes two scratches on the case almost the length of the case on brass cases. Steel cases it is harder to see.
You can just look into the ejection port, and see if those lips are above the barrel extension.
If they are, Just put a cardboard or brass shim inder the front of the magazine front tongue to shim the magazine box lower.

Thanks for the replies! is this something to be concerned about though?

@ Scoped.
It is really no big deal, it just makes for hard feeding of the cartridge ,and if you are going to reload your brass , you end up with scratches on your brass.
But if is something that you can fix by just removing two screws, and shimming the bottom metal away from the action, then why not just do it ?
I have to sometimes file or should I say reshape the front of the magazine feed ramp when I make and install custom stocks on Mosin Nagants.
You can also make the adjustment by adding a shim under the front of the receiver to raise the action a tiny bit.
It is all just a matter of getting your action and magazine in the proper relationship to each other when the action is tightened into the stock.

@ Scoped
Fix the dang rifle, and shoot what you want.
Buy some Winchester or S&B ammo and a Lee Classic Loader, and shoot just as cheap as any of the surplus stuff, and be way more accurate too.
