Mosin vs. AR today. Mosin wins.

Hit the range with the AR today for a change. I think I have Mosinitis.

I shoot better with the Mosin (mojo sighted at 100 yds), it's cheaper to feed, easier and quicker to clean (although I obviously need more practice with the AR and learning which nooks and crannies matter more each time), louder, more recoil (more fun?) I guess I just need more range time with the AR and it will probably get a bit faster and easier.

It is odd that I think I've spent more on Dewey cleaning accessories for the AR than what I spent buying the Mosin, though. Makes you wonder.
 
Yeah. This weekend I shot my M1 better than my newly acquired AR. AR functioned fine, it just don't fit me right.

I could only keep one rifle with me in an emergency such as during an evacuation, it would be the Mosin.

The most accurate iron sighted....

rifles I have are a 91/30 rebuilt by Tikka, a M39, and a MAS36.......The Finns build accurate rifles and the French never shoot theirs.....chris3
 
I got so tired of hearing people on TFL calling it a sows ear, crude, etc. that I stated I thought it was the finest bolt action battle rifle ever produced! I really like my Enfield more, but the M38 is the one I use the most.
 
Wow! Mosin more accurate than an AR or M1? I don't see that at all or anything near it with my rifles. I love the Mosin Nagant. I really do. I have a whole bunch, M38s, M39s, M44s, M91s, M91/30s, M91/59s, even a Polish wz48 (22lr Mosin Trainer). They all shoot about as good as my SKS's. None of them except the M39s shoot anywhere close to my M1 Garand. And any of my ARs with shoot circles around the M1 at 100 yards. All with iron sights.

What are you guys shooting for ammo? Handloads?
 
Nice comparison but I bet the outcome wouldn't be the same if you were to pit your Mosin against a shooter comfortable with the AR15.

For me if push comes to shove and money is on the table, I will shoot better with an M14.
That doesn't mean I will win the wager, I might be competing against a very skilled AR shooter.
It just means my scores will be better than average on that day.
 
Glad you found what works for you.
I have nothing against the Mosins. In my experience they are durable, simple, cheap, and accurate. The thing with me is that I just don't shoot them as much as I shoot other guns. They are just not as much fun for me to shoot as an FAL or AR or even a 12 gauge with slugs.
 
I love Mosin Nagants. I hope people continue to think they're trash, so they'll stay cheaper longer for me to buy.

But, I think that outshooting an AR is really you not being experienced with the AR. I shoot the Mosin well (and they are more accurate than given credit for), but my AR will drill out the target center each time, the Mosin won't.

I think I left out the part about the last 400 rounds or so being through the Mosin, and not having picked up the AR for, oh maybe 6 months.:rolleyes:

I was practicing the cheek weld on the AR, it feels like you need to put your eye right up to the sight, and is the right post a bit taller than the left on that three pronged front sight?

I guess I was just got too used to the Mosin. It is my summer project to get on better terms with the AR, especially now that I finally got around to getting a chamber brush and all the other cleaning doodads for it. Now time to order more Wolf, as so far so good.
 
Have both. Like both. But if I need a bad day gun I'm grabbing the AR15. But if I have the M44, I'll still feel grateful.

Yep, get right up there and friendly with the rear sight. Some say put your nose right up touching the charging handle to keep it consistant every time. Don't worry, it's only a little .22. Recoil isn't going to bother you. ;)

BTW: There are two fixed stock lengths (A1 length and A2 length). If yours is too long, you can probably get a shorter one(most ARs today have the longer one). That's assuming of course, you don't have an adjustable stock.

No three posts. One post and two protective ears on each side to keep it from getting banged up and knocked out of zero (like that round thingie around the front sight of the Mosin). Don't worry if one's taller. Yea, it may be. Just ignore it.

Yea, I'm getting that way myself with Mosin ammo less than $40 a can and the price of AR food going through the roof. :(

Yep, put your eyeball right there behind the rear sight. No worries, like DMK said, it won't hurt you. I've put some silicon gasket on mine right there to keep the gas from irritating me shooting heavy match ammo though.

Only the center post matters on the front sight. Focus on that! Worry about nothing else but your front sight and tirgger squeeze.

I've fired a bunch of different mil-surp bolt-guns, including an M-44, a K-31, a couple of different Mausers and a 1903A3. Of the bunch, I'll take the 03A3. I'll take an 03A3 over an M-1 Garand or M-14 if money is on the line.

But to make the odds highly unfavorable to my opponent, give me the bloody AR-15. I'll take on any iron-sighted Mosin shooter out to 600 yards on the firing range with this, and have confidence I won't have to pay! ;)
 
I love my M38, my Babushka Thunderboomer, and she stood by the bed side for quite a while, as my only rifle. Now, an SKS sits there, as the 10 round semi auto SKS is easier to use than the 5 round bolt Mosin, but I would not feel underarmed at all with my 63 year old Russian carbine! Still have about 500 rounds of surplus ammo somewhere.
Oddly enough, last range trip I took the AK and the Enfield...and loved shooting the Enfield much more - THAT'S a fun rifle!
