I have been looking at the Mossberg model 464 anyone out there have one and if so are you having any problems with it I am looking for a new 30-30 and want to stay away from the Marlin ?

I have Marlins and Winchesters, but if I were going to buy a NEW lever gun, it would be the Mossberg. It takes the best of the two designs and makes one nice setup. Balance and handling is more like the Winchester 94, but you can mount a scope low over the bore like a Marlin. The birch stocked 464 is pretty plain, but the walnut models tend to have pretty nice pieces of wood. Fit and finish is better than the current Marlin or Rossi, but not near what you would find on a new Miroku Winchester.

I have had no issues with mine , which I have had for several years. It is a good and accurate rifle and it works well scoped. Wood is plain but I hunt with mine so it doesn't matter to me. I use the Hornaday LeverRevolution 160gr ammo and it shoots very tightly out to about 250yds. The ammo is still carrying 1000ft/lbs of energy at that range.

The rifle is a combo of Winchester and Marlin as noted above. Very stout and rigid but is cycles smoothly.

I like mine. Its as accurate as any other 30-30 lever i have owned. I currently still have a mid 70's Winchester with a Williams peep, and it feels and looks more like a Winchester 94 than a Marlin.
The best features for me are the tang safety that allows me to safely unload it and that it ejects empty brass just like the Winchester AE (Angle Eject) so you can mount a scope directly on top. I put a Leupold 1-4 power on it. Its my favorite brush gun. So far I only have about 300 rounds through it of the standard Remington and Federal 170 grain loads with zero issues.

I used to have a Mossberg .30-30 that was built by Marlin. Side eject and all. I forget the model number, but it was factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts. A really nice rifle. I bought it used in 1981, so it had to be before the Remlin age. Had to sell it to pay a fine for my now ex-wife. I now have a Ted Williams model 100,which is a Winchester '94 made for Sears and Roebuck. I really don't know much about the new version of the Mossberg other than it looks like a Marlin.

Can it hold 6" at 200, 5 shots? How is the trigger? The 464 that is.

Yes, my own 464 will usually do 5 shot groups of 1 and 1/2 to 2 inches at 100 yards with the factory ammo I mentioned earlier. so, It should easily do six at 200 yards. However I have not taken it beyond 100 in my own use as its primarily for me, a woods rifle.

My accuracy reflects Murphy's experience. It will hold 1 to 1-1/2 moa at 100 and 2-3 inches at 200yds. Mossberg makes a good accurate barrel imo. I handload and use the Hornaday FTX LeverRevolution bullets which work pretty well in mine.

My soft points are accurate too but don't have the range like the Hornadays.

I once owned an earlier Mossberg lever gun, which was more Marlin in appearance, and it was a great rifle. Those new ones look nice, I might have to try one out.

still loving this gun. No problems, but only a few hundred rounds through it.

I saw the other day that Gallery of guns has the davidsons edition in stock again.

Can any if you tell me if the Mossberg 464 already has holes at the rear of the receiver where you can mount a peep sight like say this Williams model? I don't like the kind of peep sight that hangs off the side, but this one works great on my Marlin 336. I might consider adding the Mossberg if I could do the same setup.

Yep. The top of the receiver (front and rear) is drilled, tapped, and has filler screws.

One last question... Does the Mossberg 464 have any plastic parts that should be metal like the Mossberg shotguns do? Just asking before I get too excited :)

I wish Mossberg started making lever-actions in pistol calibers like the Marlin M1894, in .357 Mag and .44 Mag. If they sold them at a significantly lower price point than the Marlins they would sell like hotcakes.

The only plastic parts are the safety button, and the magazine follower. Both can be switched out for metal if you prefer, but I think that is more of a personal preference rather than an actual weak point.
