You all seem so knowledgable here that you will be able to help a shotgun newbie figure some things out. I understand that chokes are used to alter patterns. I have a new mossberg 500 combo with a 26"shot bbl and a rifled 24" bbl.The smoothe bbl is in there now with a modified choke in bbl.The gun also came with a imp cyl, and full choke.Dealer said that the modified choke will do for skeet along with some lead shot loads(noblesport trap gold#8 hard shot 23/4 ). If that is the case then under what circumstances would the other two types of chokes be employed. I'am assuming that the chokes will not be used in the rifled slug barrel. Also need info on proper ammunition to be used for the purposes mentioned above. And what kind of slug ammo should be used. The dealer sold me a box of Aguila minishells in 12 ga. Will this ammo work in the slug barrel, and is there something else i should know. thanx guys

Welcome, Wirewelder

Some GENERAL suggestions on chokes...Every shotgun/choke/ammo combination is a law unto itself

Modified is probably as good a general purpose choke as any. The IMProved CYLinder is for fast, up close shooting, like small game birds. The Full choke is usually the better choice for long-distance waterfowling, and for turkey.

The rifled barrel is for saboted slugs. The plain slugs [also called rifled slugs or Forster-type slugs] generally perform better from cylinder bore {no choke}, or improved cylinder barrels.

There are more informed folks then me on this subject, but these should get you started.

As THR's shotgun guru Dave McCracken says:

"BA/UU/R"

Buy Ammo Use Up Repeat. Nothing works as well as lots of practice.

Typing "Choke" and "Chokes" into the search feature here will give you reams of info,Wirewelder. A hour of homework will reap huge rewards.

Edited to add that I did it myself and found over 100 threads on chokes....
