Hi, I'm new to the forum but been browsing around for a little while.

I'm looking at getting a Mossberg 500 primarily for home defense, but I'd also like to have a long barrel should I want to should skeet, etc..

Saw this field/HD combo at cabela's listed for $349 (I've got a $20 coupon on top of that)
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t.../search-box.jsp.form23&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1

The 20" barrel has some muzzle brake/ breaching tool that I don't care for since I don't plan to breach any doors. Can this be removed easily or is it permanently attached to the barrel? I'm also assuming the barrel itself would then be 18-18.5" since the overall length listed is the same as a 20" 590a1.

This combo seems to be much cheaper than buying a hunting version of the 500 and getting the 18.5", considering the 500 alone seems to be going for $299 in my area.

Any thoughts?

Dick's Sporting Goods regularly marks down the Mossberg 500 combo of the 28" Field Barrel and the 24" Cantilevered Slug Barrel with scope to $250. You can get 18.5" security barrels with Imp. Cyl. Bore for less than $100 so between the 250+100 (which is the same price) you get a hunting gun for bird, deer gun, and security gun.

If you are going to use the 500 for HD (and I recommend them!) I strongly suggest you replace the plastic safety button with a metal one.

They are available from several sources; here's what Brownells offers:

The plastic button can break and the internal parts drop into the receiver; not good (yes, I've seen it happen).

BTW, that receiver-mounted safety is one of the best things about the 500; no mistaking on or off, even under stress!

Thanks for the responses.

I called every Dick's I was willing to drive to and they all had the combo you mentioned for $319.99 plus a $20 mail-in rebate. Not a bad deal, but I don't really need the deer barrel. Ended up getting a standard 500 with 28" field barrel for $239 so I was happy with that. I preferred getting the wood stock too.

I already have a $20 coupon to Cabela's so with shipping (I'm about an hour from there) I'll end up getting the 500 & the HD barrel for under $300. Not a bad deal I think. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I do plan on replacing the safety button. It's a small price and I think its just a nice touch.
