Now I know this is going to sound a bit ignerant... But at a store called Big 5 they are selling 2 different 500's. One is the Home Defence model for like $290 and the other one is on sale for like $225 and it comes with 2 barrels(20" venter and the short 18")

Is there any difference betwean the two?

Now from what I have read in Mossbergs catalog, there webpage, and nothing on the internet. The only difference is that one has a more mat(non glare) and the otherone has a shiney finish.

But what I am looking for is a long lasting durrable pump action that will take everything I put in-it and give my friends and I entertainment out on the field(hunting/clay) and good honest home protection.

My Navy Seals friend turned me onto this pump action. He said that he would never use anything ells. But his is designed for his job. But he said that the 500's in stores are just as good.

I like the idea of having the long barrel(hunting) and being able to switch.

What is the difference? Or are all 500's the same internal designs.

Thank you.

YES it does sound ignorant especially when you spell it ignerant :neener: :neener:

As far as mossbergs go you might have been looking at a mossberg 500 and a mossberg 590. The 590 is a parkenized version of it that has an 18.5 in BBL and a bayonet lug. I think it also has a metal trigger housing vs. the plasic one in a 500. The price might also have to do witht he fit and finish of it. A shotgun will pretty much never wear out so its mainly cosmetic.

As far as the 500 goes its a great shotgun. I have one that I have upgraded http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=193000 and am very proud of. I bought it used at a gun show for $180 and since put much more into it. $225 is a good price, especially for the fact it has 2 barrels, and $290 is also a good price if its a 590.

Good luck on your purchase!:D

The two M500 models at Big-5 are the exact same receiver. The only difference is what barrels come with it.

The HD model (I have this one) has a 20" barrel and a 7+1 capacity.

The more expensive one comes with a longer barrel along with a shorter one (28" and 18", I'm not sure). However, the magazine tubes on these shotguns are only 5+1 capacity.

You cannot swap barrels from the HD shotgun to the other one, without having to swap the magazine tube as well.

Of course, this information is all crap if indeed you are talking about the 590 and 500, which really are different. :neener:

The combo is a good deal for hunting/HD.

I don't really see that having 8 rounds instead of 6 is a big deal. It's easy to "top off" a pump gun. I'd take the 6-shot combo gun and use it for hunting, too.

A tip: get an aftermarket plastic magazine plug for hunting. It's a few bucks. Mossberg uses wood, which attracts water and causes rust if you leave it in.

$225 for a Mossy with 2 barrels is a really good deal. The extra 18" barrel alone is at least $75 retail.

Not to change the topic but how does the 590 differ from the 500 my friend told me to get?

from the mossy website

my $ .02:

1) combos are usually specially priced promos and sell at a higher volume than specialized defender models, therefore they can be offered for less $$$

2) some chains buy in bulk and can have special packages put together that may not appear in the catalog or on the internet and have special pricing on them

(eg: Dunham's Sports: Mossberg 500 "Special Hunter" combo...I owned one before selling to pay bills after car got totalled...

The combo: 12 or 20 gauge; matte finish on receiver; black synthetic fore end and buttstock; both barrels are parkerized; 28" ported, vent rib, interchangable choke, 2 sight beads barrel; 24" ported, cantilever mount (for scopes), fully rifled sabot slug barrel; modified choke; choke wrench; adjustment shim set for buttstock; military style nylon sling; BSA 2.5 X 20 Deerhunter shotgun scope; rings; lock; box; paperwork...you get the idea

This particular combo is not offered as stated above on their website or in their catalog

The innerds of the 500 family are common; shot capacity may vary per model; 500 innerds are shared with Maverick lineup except for the triggerguard mounted safety; Maverick handles Mossberg warranty repairs; the Mossberg pump shotgun mechanism is based on the older High Standard design

590 model shown in special purpose link listed above...later

Hope this helps!

I'm willing to bet that the $290 gun you saw was a Winchester 1300. Big 5 used to sell the Mossberg combo and the Persuader for the same price.

Anyway, I've got the Mossberg 500A Persuader in question. I like it better than my 870. It's harder to take apart and put together than an 870, but I'm pretty happy with mine. One thing to seriously consider however is that you won't have easy access to the magazine tube in case you have to clean it out. You'll have to remove the whole tube if you needed to change the spring, follower, or just clean it out.

I'd spend the extra hundred or so and just get the Mossberg 590 or get an 870 for the extra $40 or so.

I have 3 of the Moss 500 rattlers. I have a 500a 12 with smooth ventrib and 2 of the 18inch barrels one is smooth, other is rifled. Have a 500 in 20 with a cantilever and a vent rib, Also have the 410 ventrib. All 3 have taken deer everytime aimed at. They very good on quail and phesant. I have gave up on the short barrels for the 500a for deer. I cant seem to get them to cooperate with the rounds I have fed them. I have shot a couple of 870s and didnt like the fit. So I say get the multi barrel set up. Then you have 2 times the reason to shoot it. Plus it you shoot clay pigeons in the back yard at close range it irritates other shooters(you cant miss). Oh and for you all that hate .410 for deer(dont tell my 15 year old daughter and her first 10 point):neener:

The mossberg combo 18 ½ and 28 inch barrels and has a 5 + 1 in 2-¾ ammo (the chamber) capacity. The 18 ½ inch barrel is for defence the other 28 inch is for shooting birds. There are a number of barrels available for this model for all kind of hunting.

The other shot gun has a 20 inch barrel and has a long magazine tube 7 + 1 in 2 ¾ ammo is for defense only (I am not sure if it can be used for hunting) there is only one other barrel for this model a 20 inch with rifle sights.

Both of these are great for home defense. The first is better if you want to hunt with it as well.

On the subject of the 590 it has a 8 + 1 in the chamber capacity (total of 9).
The 590a1 is the same but mossberg changes some part from plastic to metal. This is the version that is issued to the G.I.s
The reasons why I bought the 590
1 parkerized finish (non-reflective)
2 Bayonet lug (I got to own one gun that I can mount a Bayonet on)
3 More ammo (ok only one round)
4 factory ghost ring sights
5 factory speedfeed stock (hold extra 4 round of ammo)

I plan to buy the hunting version next time it goes on sale a big 5.

The Winchester and the Remington are great shotguns too. It really comes down to what feel better to you

oh since you shopping on price go for the mossberg with 2 barrels if you dont want the extra barrel sell on ebay you can get between 50 to 75$ for it

If you buy one of the 500a in 12 guage and want an 18 inch smoothbore. I will sell you one cheaper than ebay. Used and needs scrubbed but for defense it would work.

NOTE:Sale on the mossberg with 2 barrels ends on sunday. Atleast thats what I was told at my local big 5 store. They said it's regular price is 299.99.

Above I said I had an 18 inch barrel, I lied I just got it out it is a 24 inch barrel smooth bore. Sorry for the mistake.
As far as the 500 with 2 barrels. I think that is a good deal. I have one I sue for deer and birds. I use the Vent rib barrel for both(just have to clean ) Mine loves the cheap O Brenneke Knock outs. My boys Moss 20 with cantilever likes Lightfields, and My daughters .410 likes Remingtons. All three have killed every deer they have shot at. I believe Mine has 16 deer to its credit. I am not sure how many Phesant and Quail. I have never ever done anything(repair wise) to this gun. I absolutely have it in my NO SALE pile.
