i am thinking of getting a mossberg 500 12 gauge field and deer combo is it any good or should i get somthing eles

Buy a newer or new 500, and I think you will have as good a gun as any.

The older ones(in my opinion) could have issues. The main issue being the safty, and the safty button. I've also seen at least two brandnew older Mossbergs that had the action bars/shell stops assembeled wrong.

The older guns had plastic safty buttons that could cause the safty to break, or otherwise malfunction. The quality control was just plain iffy at various times in Mossbergs past.

The safty can be replaced with an inexpensive steel button on the older guns, and the assembly thing can be fixed easily enough. So it may be a non issue.

Very old 500's also were single action bar guns.

your opening up a whole can of worms here man. your going to get opinions from both sides. If the shoe fits, shoot it.. lol

In 1950, Remington figured out how to make a well-balanced, great-shooting, reliable and durable pump gun for half the price of other pumps like the Winchester Model 12.

In 1961, Mossberg figured out how to make a great pump gun for even less.

In 1964, the Model 12 went out of production, missed and still loved by many, but unable to compete with a gun like the Mossberg that sold for a fraction of its price and, while not a handcrafted work of art, worked just as well, shot well, and lasted.

The 500 and the 870 have pretty much killed off their competition since then, other than Browning's Japanese BPS and the recent Benelli Nova.

Yes, the 500 is good.

(I dig the new Ithaca 37's, but they occupy a whole different niche, as they push a grand in price.)

correct me if im wrong but arent all pump action shotguns essentially the same performance wise

They are now, because only a few have survived the rigors of probably the most competitive market niche in the firearms world.

Im a shotgun snob so take what I have to say as it is.

I think Mossbergs are awesome. (didnt expect that did you)

There is only one thing, the safety can break off after some hard use. Other than that they shoot and shoot and shoot etc.
