Mossberg 500 - major problem!

I've got a Mossberg 500 Persuader that my wife bought for me in December 2005. I haven't used it much (I don't think I have more than 300 rounds through it, all 2-3/4" buck, slugs or target loads).

The only work I've had done is have gunsmiths install XS tritium ghost ring sights on it. The first gunsmith screwed & loctited the front sight ramp on it. After the screw broke & the ramp flew off under recoil, I had another gunsmith silver-solder the ramp on it.

The shotgun worked fine until this Saturday, as I was patterning 00 buck out of it. After 2 rounds of Winchester Military grade buckshot, this happened:







Anyone ever seen this before? Thoughts? I've notified Mossberg, but they haven't responded yet.

I'll be surprised if Mossberg steps up since you modified it.

i'd say it's either a barrel problem[ like resonance or something like that. i dunno], or something to do with how the sights were put on. plus, who needs ghost sights. get a bead sight. or mount a side saddle rail with a red dot sight on it.

Id say the guy who silver soldered it did not do it correctly. You need to make sure the barrel in that spot is clean and down to metal. No silver soldered on the bluing. Silver solder has a high temp rating. very high. Impact should not be a problem. The gun should have been cleaned down to the metal on both ends prior to silver soldering. Bad silver solder job my guess

I agree. The metal on the barrel and lug doesn't look like it was prep properly. They is still bluing under the brazing.

The gunsmith who soldered the sight ramp on could have weakened it but the barrel doesn't look like it was over heated from the sight ramp job.

It is an easy fix if you can find a good gunsmith.

Are you saying a bad solder job would make the barrel lug come off?

Curious, but how's that work?

It was probably excess heat from soldering on the ramp weakened the lug. Its an easy fix that I would probably do myself but I am set up for silver soldering. Best to take it to a gunsmith, shouldn't be a big deal.

Yup, there appears to be some seperation due to heating or contamination. When the barrel was heated to solder in the front sight it probably drew solder out of the fit between the lug and barrel or caused it to loosen. We have some other barrels that are getting silversolder work done on them next week, if you can get the barrel in quick we can get it resoldered for you pretty inexpensively.

The only other barrel ring I have seen come off was on a Mossberg-manufactured Rem870 18.5" barrel, and it looked about like your pics. That barrel was unmodified however.

If the 'smith who put on your front sight used a heat sink on the barrel ring during the installation, which I would expect, there should be no reason for the barrel ring attachment to the barrel to be weakened.

However, since you have had the barrel modified outside the factory, I'd not be surprised if Mossberg refused responsibility for the problem. Not that I would blame them at all if they did...

I'd not worry about it overmuch, getting it repaired properly is far more important than who pays the bill for it. You need to be able to have confidence your shotgun won't fly to pieces when you shoot it. Kinda messes with your head in a bad way, worries like that.
