I posted this a few days ago in gunsmithing, with no luck. Maybe someone here knows...

I have been thinking about installing the Mossberg ghost ring sights on my Mossberg 500. The rear sight seems to be pretty easy; just remove the screws, place rear ghost ring sight in place, and tighten screws. Here's the problem: how do you install the front sight? I have seen that gunsmithing is required, but does it screw in using the front bead hole? Or is this something that requires soldering/brazing to work?

I've looked into this as well and the correct way to have the front sight installed is to have it silver soldered on by someone who knows what they are doing. Some folks suggest you could epoxy it on with something like JB weld but I've not talked to anyone who has actually done it.

When I added up the price for a Mossberg 500 + the sights+ the cost of having a pro solder the front sight on, I decided to just wait for a used 590 with ghost rings to turn up.

Tommy The Gun Pimp found this for me:

Should show up any day. The cheesy folder and laser will go on Evil Bay and I'll buy a speed feed stock. I'll still have less than $275 in the gun when all is said and done.

I would suggest selling your 500 and waiting for a used 590. The cash outlay works out better in the long run.

Don't know how much it would cost to have it silver soldered on to an existing barrel, but I got the ghost ring barrel set, which is the rear sight plus an 18-1/2" barrel with ghost ring front installed. If you can find a good deal on one, might be worth it to have the extra barrel. If your 500 came already drilled and tapped from the factory, the rear sight will fit those holes.

I have had two done. They HAVE to be silver soldered. Locally that cost me $25. Seemed like a steal to me.

So far as I know Mossy is the only source for the barrel sets AND is the only source for the good looking Ghost Rings. The aftermarket ones I've seen just don't look right(and may not have even fit right, I never tried).

Is Mossberg the only source on these, or are there any discount dealers?

I got mine from Mossberg, and never looked elsewhere, so I couldn't say.

thebaldguy,

Do you have a 6 or 8 shot 500? The barrel set fits the 6 shot. For $25 installation, I would say get the sight set. For $65, might as well get the barrel too (if it's a 6 shot).

I have the 8 shot model 500. I got a great deal on it, so it was hard to pass up. I unscrewed the front bead to install a heat shield, and I thought the new front sight might screw into the hole as well.

I did find this site for MMC sights as an alternative to the Mossberg braze on front sight. This may be my only do it yourself option, as the local shops would charge more than $25.00 here for a braze on/silver solder job. On the other hand, I have found the front bead works well at realistic distances.

Thanks for all the help folks!
