Well, this has just cropped up recently. Got the gun in September, ran maybe 200-300 rounds through it at the range and took it hunting a few times for geese. Never had any problems then.

Last two range trips, a problem has cropped up. When shooting, the round in the magazine is ejecting under recoil. Sometimes all the way out, other times halfway out. Either way, I can't pump the action back or I do and get an empty chamber instead of my follow up shot. Pretty annoying, especially looking for live rounds on the range.

I took it apart the first time this happened and didn't see anything wrong, cleaned it good to make sure, but it came up again today within 30 rounds.

Any idea what's going on? Can I fix this myself or should I call Mossberg?

On the other hand, I never clean the action on my Mossberg 590A1 and it has performed flawlessly for thousands of rounds.

Did you buy the gun new or used? If you bought it new I would complain to the dealer. I have a 500 cruiser I have shot the mung out of and never had any problems. I still swear by Remington 870's though. There tanks! Sorry for your bum luck. Hope someone else is more help.

Bought it new, just boggles me how it can be happening! My only guess is that under recoil the metal tabs that hold the shell in the mag tube are jiggling or something, but I can't see anything wrong with them.

Remove the shell stop and the interrupter. Make sure that the slots they reside in are clean. Make sure neither are bent and that they're installed correctly; they can move a bit during assembly, although this should jam the weapon up completely rather than hiccuping like that.

If cleaning/inspection/assembly doesn't do it, contact Mossberg about what to do. It shouldn't be doing that.

Mossberg 500 Magazine Won't Release Shells

I'm experiencing the opposite problem. I recently purchased the Mossberg 500 with the synthetic stock and extended magazine. I did not check it out immediately, but instead ordered a pistol grip stock and a screw-on spare shell holder. After installing the pistol grip stock and shell holder, I attempted to load the magazine and cycle a few rounds through the action. I could only load 3 rounds into the 8-round magazine. Thinking that maybe a plug had been installed in the magazine tube (why would a plug be installed into an obvious self defense weapon?), I attempted to cycle the shells through the action. The shells would not exit the magazine and load into the chamber!

I have seen shotguns that are picky about the brand of shot shell they are fed, it relates to the dimensions of the shell rim.

I been meaning to put together a thread on adjusting/tuning the Mossberg 500 shotguns for the very troubles you speak of. Lack of time prevents me from doing it at the moment, but I will try to get it done later today.

The problems you are having are not uncommon . Particularly for new guns it seems. They relate to the shell stops and the cure is in adjusting them for reliable function. The premature opening of the breach you mention is a seperate problem , again requiring adjustment. Once done, the 500 is a very reliable gun - unfortunatly in todays manufacturing world ,very little hand labor is allowed to tune these actions at the factory.

Later today I'll give some info on how to .

OK , I just finished a thread on Mossberg feeding - have a look and if there are questions you can PM me or post them - hope it helps .

The son of a guy with whom I shoot fixed this problem by buying an 1187 to replace his 500. :D
