I have a Mossberg 590A1 12 GA pump action shotgun with a 20 inch barrel and 8 round magazine capacity. Model number 51663. Since I have gotten it I have put 50 rounds through it of slugs and birdshot. I would like to clean it and lube it up but I am unsure of what exactly I need. I dont want to walk into a gun shop and tell them this since they might make me buy a whole bunch of stuff I dont really need, to make a sale.

I already have Hoppes #9 and Break Free CLP that I use for cleaning my GLOCK 19 if that helps.

Bore snake? I watched a video of someone taking the entire receiver and everything apart. Is that necessary every time? Looks difficult.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

IMO, bore snake after you shoot it, drop of oil or two in the bolt/receiver area (anywhere you see wear/contact, along the sides of the bolt where the elevator rubs, etc.) and shoot the heck out of it. Once a year or whenever you feel the trigger getting gritty or whatever, pull the trigger group and hose it down with solvent, brush with toothbrush, blow it off with compressed air or something similar, bit of CLP, and put it back in. You might fully disassemble the gun once a year or so, or whenever you feel like it. I never take apart the trigger group and don't recommend you do unless something breaks or you really know what you're doing.

It really isn't difficult to disassemble the receiver/components. Quite straightforward. You should do it just so you know how. Pretty elegant, simple design IMO.

With my 590 I usually shoot the heck out of it, Bore Snake the barrel, wipe down the outside with Rem Oil, and call it good. I will occasionally take it all the way down, per the manual, and clean out all the crud. I have never had one stop working though.

I even dropped mine in the sand out in the desert. I poured an water in it to get out as much sand as possible and then worked the action a few times to get is going again. The inside extractor broke from the sand, but the 590 has two, so it continued to work fine.

They are great shotguns in my opinion and take a lot of abuse and neglect to make them stop working.

Just picked one up used. First thing I did (after test firing, since I met at the range to buy it) was take it all the way down. I honestly believe that I may have been the first person to clean that gun since it was new. I have a 12ga Boresnake and love it! I'll be "cleaning" this one the same way I clean my 500: Boresnake after the range, run an oiled patch down the barrel, and drop some oil in the chamber and on the moving parts underneath.

I also have a "mop" and run that through the magazine tube after I feel the rounds start loading kind of gritty. Amazing what kind of dirt and stuff gets in the magazine tube.

Glock does not recommend using Hoppes #9 or any other Solvent which contains a trace of ammonia. You can clean your Mossberg with a good Otis pull threw cleaning kit and CLP. I have found the CLP and the Otis Pull Threw Cleaning Kit is sufficient to clean the Mossberg pump. TOGGLELOCK
