I got a call from Mossberg the other day. The Mossberg rep. said that I needed to send them my new shotgun back for repairs to the muzzle brake. Has anyone heard of this recall? I don't really like the idea of doing this. Has anybody had any experience with Mossberg customer service or a gun recall?

They called and told me there was a problem with the muzzle brake. Told me I would be sending it to Maverick Arms in Eagle Pass, TX. The next day I got a shipping box and pre-paid label from FedEx with all the info on the label. All seems legit but like you said; I thought all recalls were done by mail. Thanks for the reply.

Sounds kind of like an "informal" recall....

But more importantly!!!! How did they get your name and number??? Did you "register" the gun with Mossberg?? If your local shop called you and said, "Hey we got a call from Mossberg, blah, blah, blah" that would be one thing, but you got the call directly from Mossberg, I'd be more than a little "ticked-off" at my local shop for giving out my information. Makes you wonder if those 4473 forms we fill out stay in the store.... sorry the paranoia is setting in.....

Many firearms include a "registration card" of sorts in their boxes. You fill it out and send to em for whatever reason.

He may have done that.

I'd set their materials aside for a moment, look up Mossberg's 800 number myself, call it and ask the company.

That way, I'm sure that I'm dealing with the company itself and I can be certain that nobody's impersonating a Mossberg rep in the hope of stealing a few shotguns.

Thanks for all of your replies. They must have gotten my name and phone number from the local gun dealer. I didn't register the gun with Mossberg and haven't opened the owners manual/registration pkg. yet. The best guess I can come up with is that Mossberg called all the dealers they sold these particular guns to and asked them for the buyers info.

I have recieved the same phone call. I have heard that the problem is that the brake tends to spit pellets out the side. I have had it happen once now abit worreid when I shot it. They havent givin me a fix for it just that they need my barrel back. I have heard from my dealer that they will probably take the brake off and send it back to me. I wont send it back till I find out the fix. Has anyone got anywhere with this?

True mossberg quality.

"Here. have this cool looking shotgun, just make sure your kids arent standing on either side of you."

blech.

Made in the USA.

Ya it kinda sucks this is my first mossberg and first shotgun. Not even the one I ordered but I accepted it anyway now scared to shot it lol.

I need to hear more on this story... I understand it probably sucks for you guys but as a remington fan this is just too funny. I always wondered what the guys at mossy were thinking when i saw the pic of that thing on their website. (i must admit it got my attention but )

Uh, seriously? Like, you found pellets embedded in something nearby?

Maybe the recall is because Mossberg recently found a muzzle brake that was shaped more like a phallus.

Have you by any chance checked the websites of Remington and Mossberg to compare the total number of recalls?
Remington has probably three times the total number of recalls.
Mossberg has only two posted on their recall page; one for Howa rifles from the 70's I believe, and one for bolt action shotguns from '93 I think.
Nothing on the pump or auto shotguns at all.

Now how's THAT for funny? (..kinda ironic, isn't it?...)

ask them to just take off the muzzle brake for you and toss it in a garbage before they send your barrel back.
+1

And ask them to smack themselves upside the head for putting it on there in the first place

Well, here is an auction on Gunbroker for a "Roadblocker" 500 that is claims is "post recall". Looks to have the same brake on the end with the same level of wang:

I've never owned a Mossberg, and do own Remingtons, but knock it off; Remington has had their own problems.

"In 1995, there was a class action lawsuit against Remington claiming barrel steel formerly used in the several models of shotguns was not strong enough and the barrels would sometimes burst in normal use. Remington denied the claim. Before a trial in these matters (and therefore before any determination to the validity of the claims) a settlement was reached. Under the terms of the settlement Remington now makes barrels from a different type of steel which can withstand higher pressure, and voluntarily replaced barrels sent
to them.

The shotgun barrel that exploded fell into the range of Model 870 shotguns in this lawsuit, which included Serial #s lower than B457166U. (Also included in this lawsuit was the Model 11-87 with Serial #s lower than PC495255).
"

Wonder if they'll have a similar recall when the next generation of shotguns has a faulty 30X scope on it...

I wouldn't be worried about any scams or anything. I have received parts for my Mossy that I ordered directly from Mossberg. Every package I have received in the mail was from Maverick Arms in Eagle Pass, TX. The only thing that sucks is that it will probably take several weeks to get your gun back.
