Hey,

Can I chop a 24" Mossberg 500 barrel which has rifle sights on it down to 18.5" and reinstall the front rifle sight blade?

I have a chance to buy the 24" barrel but have not seen it. Therefore I have no idea how the blade is attached to the barrel or if it can be reinstalled.

Why do I want to do this? No reason other than I want rifle sights on an 18.5" barrel.

Thanks.

If they're soldered, they could be resoldered. If dovetailed, you'd need to cut a new dovetail.

Not really work for an amateur-

Reg 500 deer bbl, front sight soldered on.
There is a low temp solder sold through Brownells. Could rig a fixture easy enough (look at what they sell and fab something similar).

Supposedly there is a black Loctite for sight attachment.

There are clamp on sights as well.Proly use a different rear sight since they sit up a bit.

I have not used the Loctite or solder. I'd go solder route if it was me.

Cutting, desoldering, squaring, crowning, resoldering, and refinishing is a bit of a project. Not impossible, but it's work.

I did some extensive googling on attaching shotgun front sights for a project shotgun of mine. The glue on sights tend not to work well.

The real work would be getting the front sight off the barrel stub and getting it properly aligned and solidly mounted on the shortened barrel.

Is this the traditional smoothbore Mossberg 500 24" with slug sights for Foster slugs, or the new rifled Mossberg 500 24" with slug sights for saboted bullets?

I have one of these barrels. Mine has a wide blade front sight. The attachment is hidden by the wide base but I can tell for sure it is not dovetailed. The rear sight is dovetailed making it adjustable for windage by tapping and for elevation with a locking screw. Mine is smooth bore and VERY accurate with Remmy Foster slugs. Prints fist size groups at 75 yards. Chopping it may ruin accuracy? Would be easier to buy 18.5 inch bbl and dovetail in the sights you want? Barrel at front sight may be too thin to dovetail.

Mossberg used to sell a set of ghost sights, front sight had to be soldered and the rear sight attached to the holes in the top of the M500 receiver...very accurate...I did fine every individual gun needed to be tested for the brand of slugs it fired the best.... same models fed same slugs differently...........also have a 500 barrel that came standard with front sight and flip up rear sight was 24 or 26 inches long
