Over here.
I saw this at Wal-mart earlier today. Pretty nice looking shotgun, Mossberg 500.

I noticed that the normal top of the receiver safety had been replaced with a pushbutton on the front of the trigger guard.

Is this something new from Mossberg? And if so, when did they start doing it?

I am sure you were looking at a Maverick shotgun. They look alot like their parent Mossberg's, but Mavericks do have the safety forward on the trigger guard. Mossberg owns Maverick or something like that.

O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc of North Haven, CT "owns & operates" Maverick Arms, Inc of Eagle Pass, TX.

The Maverick is Mossberg's value-price shotgun line.

Most of the parts wil directly interchange between Mossy 500's & Maverick 88's. So, you could end up (by swapping fire control groups around) a Maverick with NO safety, and a Mossy 500 with 2 safeties.

Don't know if that is actually doable, but theory suggests it is.

Mav vs Moss

Aside from the safety location, what are the differences between the M88 and the 500s, or, for that matter, the 590s? Are the Mossbergs sturdier?

I haven't examined a "New" Maverick lately, but 2 differences I do recall (Mine is a 1990-vintage Maverick) is that mine only has 1 'pump action bar' i.e the bar that connects the fore-end to the bolt and other innards, while IIRC, the Mossy 500's always had 2.

And the Mavericks have the safety control on the trigger assembly, while the Mossys use the 'tang safety'...button on top of the receiver.

Not sure how important this is to folks...The Maverick has a 1-year warranty, while the Mossy warranty is 10 years.

Parts will interchange, but only within gauge & mag capacity...can't put a barrel from a 6-shot on an 8-shot receiver/mag tube assembly.

In the late models the difference is minimal, the safety location is about it. I picked up a reciever/trigger group and was a able to put a barrel, stock set and mag tube from a beat-up, mis-drilled 500 right on it. I think the Mavs come with synth stocks only, but I could be wrong there.
