Ok, lets try this again. my brothers new-to-him 500, dosent release the bolt after it has been fired. is there something in the bolt that i should be looking at, or in the trigger group, for the problem??

Probably dry, or a bur left on something from making it.

Pop out the trigger group pin, take the trigger assembly out, and oil the crap out of everything that moves.

Then put it back together and dry fire it until you get tired.

If that don't work call Mossberg and they will probably send you a new exchange trigger group.

If the bolt doesn't release with the hammer down (fired position) but the manual release still works you need to look in the trigger group. There's two springs that run the release, one for the manual release bar, the other driven by the hammer. Someone on here had a similar problem awhile back. It turned out to be a loose/missing pin on the hammer not driving the release spring if I remember right.

So, Mossberg shouldn't tell you to dry-fire to function test the gun on page 13 of the owners manual then?

Circa 1968 me and my brother were dry firing our 500's. His firing pin flew out the barrel and shortly there after so did mine. No matter, a quick trip to our local gunsmith as they are easy to make.

thanks guys, found the problem. whoever had this gun before him, completely took apart the trigger group, and lost one of the main spring guide pins. thanks again
