"Slam fire," yes, and they certainly were supposed to -- no work. Today all I know is the current short A1 doesn't and if any of them were I suppose we'd still know. Gotta understand, my first 590 is, well, I'm guessing two decades old...

1k thats a nice 590

i have a question does anyone know if the OKC3S bayonet will fit?

i asked in the non firearms forum but didnt get an answer

I have the exact same shotgun as the one you are after and I love it. Back in the late 80s when the M590 was adpoted, that was the same model I carried on posts as well. No, there was NOT a M590A1 originally in service, that came later on. The 590s we had back then were excellent guns and the one I got also has been an excellent performer as well. My only complaint is the plastic safety button tends to be breakage prone but that was a $15 fix with a metal button.

if you want a tactical/HD gun i would have to say the IAC reproduction trench gun or the more pricy cimarron reproduction, never heard of any 1897 types jamming period, which is what you want in this type of gun. also you have the coolness factor. also, slam firing is fun :), and all 1897s can do it. you also cannot beat the simplicity of a hammer in any kind of gun. comes standard in trnch gun versions with heat shield and bayonet lug.

why do you think that is?

I can only guess, but since you asked why I think that is:

1) I believe the wads do make a tighter seal for the wad/slug traveling down the barrel.

2) The 20" 590 is a bit heavier, but not overly so, helping reduce some of the felt recoil.

3) I have wondered (though not seriously enough to actually research) whether the Mossy barrel is made with a longer forcing cone to reduce recoil.

For the most part, I just enjoy the effect of reduced recoil rather than getting wrapped up in the specifics of why. The Remmy is for hunting anyway, so the increased (sometimes painful) recoil for a few shots on game per year is of little consequence.
