mossberg 817 varmint yes or no?

Ok, was at the local wally world yesterday and noticed a wood stocked heavy barrel bolt gun sitting amongst the other "plastic" 22 guns and saw a $224 price tag. I was curious so got the clerk to open up the cabinet and let me take a look at it.

Turns out it was a Mossberg 817 varmint in 17hmr. Never heard of it before, but was interested. After speaking with the manager about giving me a discount due to the fact it had a couple dents in the wood on the stock (another gun's bolt had bumped it) I said I would take it. Only problem is that their printer was down and since they went to electronic 4473's she couldn't do the paperwork and print it out until the printer is fixed.

so, right now the gun is sitting with a hold tag on it until they get their printer fixed. This also gives me time to query folks that have this gun or have shot it (I don't want input from folks saying I should go out and spend 500 on a CZ or high end savage with the accu-triger).

So, let me know what you think of the gun if you have it or have shot it. It will be a fun gun and will be replacing one of my 10/22's that will be for sale here soon. Ammo is always in stock down here for the 17hmr and I would be putting on either a simmons 6-24x40 A/O or a leupold mk1 3-9x40 (both just sitting collecting dust). main use would be for punching paper, but might take squirrel and fox or bobcat hunting (already have lots of regular varmint guns in 22-250, 243, etc... but this would just be for 100yds and less).

I don't know how the Mossberg rimfires are, but I just bought a Savage 917BV with laminate stock and Cabela's brand 17hmr Tactical scope for $329. I have only been able to shoot it at 50yds so far due to high winds, but I got one ragged little hole dead center.

no info on the rifle but what did you say to get the discount and how much was it? I saw a Henry .22 at wal-mart last one they had with some dents in the stock and asked for a discount and they said no they don't do that. I walked away. I won't pay the full price for a new item that is damaged... I really wanted them to discount it for me. Oh well, walked away and ended up finding a 1955 Marlin 336 in .35 Remington at a pawn shop for $185

well, got the call yesterday that wally world fixed their printer and i could come in to pick up the gun and do the paperwork.

told them i would be in around 1100 today and they said no problem.

I get to wally world at exactly 1105 and they said they sold my gun this morning.

I was like ***!! and a bit pissed. I then asked to speak to the manager who had written the hold notice and put it on my gun personally. She wasn't in, but another manager was. He appologized and said they could order another at the same price and get me the same discount promised on the other, but it would take 3 weeks to 2 months for it to arrive. I then asked if he had any other heavy barreled 17hmr guns in stock. he had his sporting goods monkeys look in the vault and they had a Marlin 917V. He gave me the same price and discount as the mossberg (big discount on the gun from walmart's low price).

I am happy and now have a Marlin 917V heavy blued barrel and wood stocked model, plus it comes with 2 mags (the mossberg only had 1) and the trigger is really good on it (had thought about ordering a Savage 93r17 GV with accutrigger) the receiver is drilled and tapped and comes with removable weaver bases and also has the old fashion grooves milled into the receiver for a .22 style set of rings, and the stock has sling studs already installed (the mossberg didn't).

Also, they had lots of ammo in stock today, so got a couple hundred rounds to play with this weekend.

I just pointed out the damaged area of the stock (a couple of dings) and asked for a discount. they got the manager and she approved the discount. then the other manager that sold me the marlin gave me the same discount and adjusted the original price of the marlin to reflect the price of the mossberg so that I would save even more.

I think you lucked out and got a great deal, IMO the Marlin is a better rifle than the Mossberg. I don't own one but a friend does and it shoots right there with my Savage.
