So Ive talked about how accurate my 802 is for 250 dollar rifle, and i enjoy shooting the little gun quite a bit. One thing Ive always disliked was the stock that came on the gun. It isnt bad as far as cheap .22 sporter stocks go, but it felt weird with the guns 21" heavy barrel.
The problem is that there arnt any replacement stocks for the 802. Boyds does list stocks for both the 702 semi, which looks like it might work, and the 817 17hmr that I now know is a lot of work to make fit.
Not knowing if either option would be close enough for me to fit, I havent bought one till last week, when i ran across an 817 provarmint (which i the stock design wanted) on closeout.
I snapped it up and crossed my fingers that it would be a drop in...or at least be close enough that i could make it work.

Turns out its.....close enough to make work.

It appears the 817 receiver is actually quite a bit bigger around, and longer than the 802. The screw hole spacing is about 1 inch farther out. Last but not least the trigger group assembly, box thingy, is significantly longer.

What this means to someone wanting to drop and 802 action into the 817 stock, is that while you can drop it in, nothing lines up.

So to make it work i had to add some wood here and there, drill a new forward action screw hole, add fill to the sides of the action inlet, and make new cutouts for the safety, bolt handle, and because the action sits lower in the stock open up the rear so the bolt could move freely.
The barrel channel also wasnt deep, or wide enough, again I THINK because the 802 action sits about 1/4" lower in the stock than the 817, or heavy barrel on the 802s actually larger around than the 817 straight barrel.

This was more work than i REALLY wanted to do on this little gun, but im actually pretty happy with how it came out.
Im happier with this gun than i was with my much "nicer" Savage 93r17btvss.

All i have left to do is figure out how to make the bolt handle more comfortable, I think ill wait till i can snag a cheap spare before i start messing with mine tho.

I also modified where the stop was for the magazine, it let the mag ride to high and tied up the bolt sometimes.
One of the neat things about this gun, is it will feed 5 .22 shorts from the mag as long as the mag didnt ride up. So with the modification i can shoot .22 shorts, longs, and long rifles. Which is nice as i do shoot around the house some, and i MUCH prefer cb caps, which i can only get in shorts here.

I do still need to plug the unused front action screw hole....forgot about that till just now. IMG_20170805_162848175.jpg IMG_20170805_162922097.jpg IMG_20170805_163039330.jpg IMG_20170805_163049980.jpg IMG_20170805_163058809.jpg

Nice looking rig. Something very satisfying about doing a custom fit job like you did. Nice work.
Thanks, I agree.
I get accused of polishing the proverbial turds quite a bit by my buddies, mostly because i LIKE buying projects. If there isnt SOMETHING i can tinker with on a gun It usually get stuck in the cabinet and only taken out to make sure i can still shoot it ok.

Thanks!
The "coyote" color option is a boyds upgrade color i havent handled. Now that ive seen it i person, Im thinking i might change the color scheme for my next build to include it. I was previously going with gray and black, or red and black.

Thanks, not wanting to explain to the wife why i wasted good gas money on a piece of wood that didnt fit plays into the perseverance part of it.....

Thanks guys!

Gotta do a bit more relieving of the barrel channel and add more bedding accuracy isnt as good as it was. I think the rear of the actions still wiggling, and theres a high spot in the middle of the barrel channel.

Thanks.
Stock work isnt one of those things I really like doing, but I REALLY like wood stocks. Ive had quite a bit of experience with it at this point LOL.

Thanks guys!
Gonna take the stock to work and sand it, add more bedding, and do another coat of poly.
