I am looking at either a Stoeger Coach Gun or a Mossberg 835 for HD mostly. I like the looks of both, but they are 2 different animals. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The 835 comes with 28" smoothbore or 24" rifled barrel, so you are going to have to buy a shorter barrel to be handy for home defense. I have read that the 590 barrels fit on the 835 but have never seen anything official from Mossberg stating that. Also the 835 is a 3.5" gun which is unnecessary for home defense. The most common buckshot shell is 2.75"

Mossberg, but you might want to look at a different mossberg pump-action, like the 500 or 590, if you won't be hunting waterfowl with it.

The reason to get the coach gun woud be that you're not going to practice with it much, or that your home is very small, and manuvering the mossberg would be too difficult. If you're not house clearing,(and you shouldn't be house clearing) that's probably not the case.

you will have to buy a specific slug barrel for the Mossy 835 since their field barrels have too much backbore to them; if you just want to use buckshot then you'll be fine

If it's under $200, get the 835. If not, or if you never plan to use a shotgun for ducks, turkey, geese or upland hunting, shop around for a mossberg 500 or Remington 870. They are better set for home defense.

Nothing specifically wrong with the 835. It's a great gun. It's just not at all designed for home defense and it does not have many aftermarket accessories to help it be so.

ReadyontheRight - the store wants $350 for it.

It is the one on their site with the synthetic/turkey series thumbhole stock, 20" overbored barrel, ported tube, and fiber sites. item#63125

I don't plan to shoot it much and really only want to keep it handy, just in case. I had a Mossberg Cruiser, but got rid of it. Pistol grips are not for me and I just didn't like the gun.

I'm looking for a "get out of my house!" gun.
