Ive been looking into getting a semi auto shotgun for home defense and hunting duties. This Mossberg combo looks very promising. Would this shotgun be reliable with full power buckshot and slug loads? How would it hold up going from home defense to the duck blind duties? Are these reliable guns?

Thanks for your opinions

The Mossberg 930 is one of the most reliable shotguns being sold today...

You'll have no problems with full power buckshot, the only troubles have been reported with the shorter barrel and light (below 1200 fps) loads... With the longer barrel, you can shoot anything...

Make sure to clean the shotgun extrememly well before shooting, the perservative packing grease that Mossberg ships in the guns can get "gummy" if it's not cleaned out.

My only complaint would be the front site on the SPX model. It's big, ugly, and impossible to find your target. At least mine was. I've never had any FTF or FTE. I've got an 18.5" and a 28" barrel and have fired 2.75" 8 shot and 3" 00 buck through both and have never had a problem. I will say that you'll need to make sure that when you load it you press the shell all the way into the mag. I know this is true with other shotguns but the 930 seems to sensitive to this issue.

For the 930 shotgun, I've shot about 400 rounds through one. With buck, I can expect about one issue per box of 25. For birdshot, about three issues per box of 25. Maybe it just needs a good cleaning. Having said that, IMO, it isn't reliable enough for home defense. I have never had an issue in 1000+ rounds through a 590 pump unless I short stroke it.

The 930 MUST be cleaned very well before its first use....

Mossberg ships its guns with a light film of preservative grease and if this isn't removed with a good cleaning, and then a very light coat of lube or oil, the preservative stuff gets gummy when heated and causes the exact problems you've described... It's also a lot harder to clean out after it heats up (like after being fired)...

I have the combo that you are looking at. I love it. As stated above make sure you clean it when you first get it. The only issue that I had with it was what was already talked about, the light loads in the short barrel. This issue has resolved it's self with some heavy rounds down range and some more cleaning. The light stuff no longer has a problem, just needed to be broken in. If you are planning on using it for HD just make sure it is broke in and that you put a lot of rounds down range with the load you are planning on using. It's a good gun and yo will be happy with it.
