I was at a gunstore this afternoon picking up a handgun.
While there my 11 year-old son took a look at a Mossberg Youth Model in 20 gauge.
It fit him pretty well, but the price tag didn't fit either of us!

What surprised me was that the short barrel (my son estimates it was 22 inches long) was cylinder choke. I expected it to be in the "compromise choke," modified.

Is it common for these to be bored cylinder?

It wouldn't be a bad choke for a lot of our hunting, grouse and rabbits are usually taken close. For ducks, geese, or turkeys it would be awfully open though.

ACP230:

I took a look at Mossberg's website...the stock # 54132 is a 20Ga "Bantam" [Youth Model] with honey satin finish wood, 22" barrel, vent rib with 3 of the 'accu-choke" tubes.

MSRP is $316. Can be taken home for less. [What was the asking price?]

Is that the one you were examining? I am guessing it is a "New-in-Box" shotty.

If both you and son like that Bantam model Mossy, it is certainly worth going back and asking about the choke tubes.

If it is a model that has been on the shelf for a long time (we are talking years), it my not have the accu-choke tubes, or perhaps the barrel was swapped. (Should also have a vent-rib) In either case, if without the choke tubes, I would ask for a major price break. Most Mossy chokes, except for the XX-Full 'Turkey Tube', have an MSRP of $15.

My local Wal*Mart has the mossberg youth bantams for $199.00. I was looking at one for my 12 year old daughter. Most of my other shotguns are wingmasters, so I'm leaning towards a 870 youth for her. Can't decide.

Got one of these for my Household 6 and 10y/o daughter to use. Paid $265 for a crown grade combo (22" VR with 3 chokes and 24" rifled with RS bbls). The HH6 has gotten pretty good with it, and if I'm not careful is gonna out shoot me on the trap field pretty soon. (She can also use it for HD if I'm not here). My Daughter is gonna take the Hunter Saftey course at our club and we'll definitely do a youth Turkey hunt and probably do the youth firearm deer season at Midewin Tall Grass this fall. (Walt Disney has poisoned her mind and she thinks that those vegetation destroying eating machines are "cute"). It might be a year or two before I take her out for pheasant, but she better hurry, her 3 y/o little brother has his eye on using it soon...........
