mossberg bolt action .410

ok guys this is the first shotguni have ever owned (i have may pistols and rifles). it is a mossberg model 183d-d 410 ga 3 inch chamber with what i am assuming is the FULL CHOKE, says mossberg 410F on screw on choke. being what it is and i have never even fired a shotgun before, i need to know what type of shells can i fire through this gun?? how big of shot can i shoot???

One of my favorite shotguns. I actually have 6 bolt action 410's including a several of the mossberg 183's. Great shotgun and will shoot just about any of the 410 shells out there. The only round you will not want to run through it will be slugs. The rest will work great. Some of the mossbergs were a little picky about how you load the magazine. Make sure the rounds are pushed all the way to the rear of the magazine when loading and that the rims of the shotshell do not overlap, sounds simple but can cause feed problems if not all the way to the rear.

Isn't that the largest in 12Ga. or anything else as well? The biggest I know of is 6 pellets of 000 in .410, a pretty hefty load for that scattergun, but it should do fine.

Shells for the .410 come in 2 1/2" size with 1/2 oz of shot or 3" with 11/16 oz. I use the 2 1/2" for target shooting and the 3" for hunting.

Shot sizes range from #8 and 9 (mostly for clay targets), 6 and 7 1/2 for most upland game, 4 which IMO serves no useful purpose in a .410, and 000 buckshot and slugs mainly for HD purposes. I've shot a lot of grouse, woodcock, rabbits, and squirrels with a .410 over the years but the patterns thin out past about 25 yards or so. Ethical hunting with one requires that you learn it's limitations and don't exceed them.

I find that a modified choke works better than a full choke for giving good patterns from my .410's.

No, you can get 00 buck in 12, I've got plenty.

I've personally never seen 6 pellets of 000 in .410, just 5 in the Winchester load.

000 (0.36") is bigger than 00 (0.33") you know.

I have a 183 series Mossberg bolt action shotgun in .410 with a fixed full choke.
Let's say for the sake of arguement that you actually want to hunt with this shotgun and aren't trying to find the largest testosterone fueled cartridge to ward off whatever haunts your dreams in the middle of the night.

I have found that 3" length, #7 1/2 shot size, 3/4 ounce loads work well for rabbits, quail, and other smaller upland game.
Prairie chickens, Ptarmagen, etc. depending on location.
The same load in #5 shot is excellent for squirrels and I even managed to kill a raccon with two shots using this load.
