I kind of like the concept. If they could stuff a shoulder stock in the tube as well I'd like it better but the idea is sound. Somebody in the marketing department is actually thinking it seems.
 
Interesting. I would have liked to have seen a full/folding stock on it, but still kind of neat. And the price doesn't seem crazy either. It would make more sense to me to include the survival get in the marine version and the tools in the other. Maybe they assume that if are you on a boat, you already have a survival kit.

I think it would make a fine trunk gun if the case is watertight.

On the other hand, I think it'll also attract those non-gunners that feel that its a good idea and will buy one and stick it in the closet. They'll rest easy knowing they have it but will never learn to use it.

Most that think far enough ahead already have their stuff together. This looks like something for the folks that have already gone through a disaster (unarmed) and realized, after the fact, that they should have had something like this.

I already have something similar. 12ga and survival kit is inserted into a large pvc pipe and both ends are capped, one end sealed other end removeable. Carrys nice in the trunk.
 
first thing i'd probably do is repaint...

the "M500Cruiser" or "Mariner" makes it a bit more conspicuous.

it would be nice if it had ammo... are there any states that prohibit sale of firearm and ammo at same time? that could be the reason for not selling them together...
 
As an ocean boater, I'm not sure about the mariner version... frankly, the tool kit would be a throw-away for me... and I wouldn't seriously consider a pistol-gripped 12ga as "emergency" supplies for any sort of normal marine emergency. If I was worried about attackers I'd want it more accessible. If the boat was sinking out from under me I'd be grabbing my ASB (abandon ship bag), not my shotgun. If it had a set of tubes or holders to hold flares of various sorts and ideally a line thrower as well, that would make a lot more sense... but at this point it definitely looks like boating gear designed by a non-boater.

The other kit looks much more interesting actually. Not that you couldn't put together something similar, but if it was nicely done I wouldn't begrudge them their money. If I was buying one, I'd probably buy that.

Aren't pistol grip shotguns supposed to be fired from waist level? As in, not sighting down the barrel? Seems like it'd be very marginal except as a personal defense gun.... maybe if you practiced a lot but still... a bit too much of a compromize to me.

Personally, I wouldn't want them to throw in ammo. I would want a neatly designed ammo holder if possible.
 
I think that it's a great idea, both from a marketing and utilitarian idea. It packages shotguns as a essential emergency item that SAVES LIVES. :D This puts a dent in the anti's demonization of all firearms.

Personally, I'd buy a canister or three. One to keep, one of give to the gun-phobic wife and one to leave with my parents.

Lastly, apart from the missing ammo, the possible inclusion of bottled water, one or two MREs and maybe a small crank-powered flashlight, Mossberg should consider releasing other JIC tubes with their .22 rifle, .410 shotgun and 20ga shotgun to cater to less recoil tolerant individuals. The cylinder packages could be called the "survivalist", "defender" and "guardian" respectively.
 
Well, most of us propbably have the stuff already anyways. I wonder if you can pucrhase the canister (without the shotgun) separately some place.
 
id consider that a good start to a bail out kit. but id add some stuff of my own. its funny i was in a gunshop on friday and saw that tube but didnt look into what it was. il check it out when i go to pick up my mosin nagant
looks like a side folder stock could fit int he tube
 
I saw one of these at a local shop this past week. They had it less than two days before someone bought it.

Looks like the Mossberg marketing department has been reading internet gun forums, and decided there was a market for SHTF / TEOTWAWKI / BOB / Zombie Invasion gun kits.
 
I like it for the fact that it shows Antis a better use for a shotgun, that is, to save lives. I don't like it because some people may not think enough about it to learn to use it correctly. I'd like to buy a marine shotgun for my boat (that I'll have one day), so this is a pretty neat idea.
 
There are plenty of folding stocks they could fit on that gun and would probably still fit.

Keltec should team up with someone for their folding SU16.

Bring back the takedown leveraction.
 
The .pdf says that can, tube, or whatever you want to call it is waterproof to 40 feet, with that much volume in the tube it should float pretty good, too.

Used a mossberg similar to that as an entry weapon in Iraq. Very reliable, just like all Mossberg products. I would like to see a folding or retractable stock as well. Why didn't I think of this?:banghead:
 
I'd like to find the carry tube manufacturer.

Of course, as stated, you can make your own tube from PVC.
 
Well it's great marketing, if the tube floats and your boat is sunk by Somali pirates or drug runners I guess it's a win. hahah, Seriously though if it makes firearms more reasonable and rational to anti-gunners or either way Joe-Public, I applaud them. More concerned and responsible firearm owners is always a win.
 
Had one of the Marinecote kits given to me by my very right wing, conspiracy theorist, survivalist uncle for my Bday this last June. At first I was like, "What the hell am I going to do with this?" But upon further inspection I realized the can is large enough to add some stuff. Here's a list of what I added to the existing kit:

1 small breakdown fishing pole w/small spincast reel and 2 spools of 8 lb test
1 smal fabric roll up fishing tackle kit
3 boxes of Federal rifled slugs (deer/bear and such)
2 boxes of Federal Game Shok HI Brass 6 shot, in a 50 shell belt (all around bird/small game)
1 S&W 4 inch folder
1 Glock field knife
4 loaded mags for my Glock 23
1 Stinger LED flashlight with car charger

I also added one of those shoulder stocks that fold up and over the top of the receiver, I can't remeber the name but it's just like the one on the SPAS 12. It hurts like hell with the slugs but definately increases accuracy over the pistol grip alone. I'm thinking a set of ghost rings might not be a bad idea but that will require cutting a hole in the fold up stock to allow it to go over the rear sight.

It's a tight fit but it does all cram in there. It's now permanently mounted under the rear seat of my pick up. Add that stuff to the gear and food in my bail out bag and I consider myself pretty well prepared for any type of evacuation emergency. I have 2 tents in the tool box in the truck along with a portable toilet(for the wife and daughters) and our in laws have 17 acres of rural property that is set up for camping and is loaded with game and has a spring fed stream filled with trout that runs right through it. So, if it actually comes down to having to do a bugout I feel pretty covered.
 
They do not include ammo because it is illegal to transport ammo and guns together. It is still a really neat idea. When I first saw them I panned the idea because I could not stand PGO shotguns. I now own a folding stock and have come to understand that the PGO has it's place if handled correctly. The conventional wisdom today is to hold the gun chest height.
