I've narrowed my search to a Mossy 88 Security 18 1/2" model 31023 or a Mossy Special Purpose Persuader/Cruiser 18 1/2" model 50411 for home defense. There seems to be approx $175 difference in price. ($150 vs $325) Worth it or no? A side issue is, since I go between Fla & NC often, should I have one in both places or carry it back & forth?

They are very nearly the same guns. On the Maverick 88, the safety is a crossbolt safety on the front of the trigger guard compared to the 500 which has a tang-mounted safety. There are a couple of other minor differences, but nothing of consequence. The same barrels and buttstocks will fit both. the Maverick 88 probably has the permanent forend, though, so you won't be able to change it.

The Mossberg Maverick 88 will do just fine as a no-frills shotgun. You could buy two Mossberg Maverick 88s for that price and not be out too much if one gets stolen at your other place.

I shoot left handed and prefer a 500 mossberg. I hunt with it, though, not for shooting people. If I shot a person with it, I'd be a Dick Cheney.

The crossbolt safety would be desirable to the tang safety, though, if you wanted to ruin the gun with a pistol grip and tacticool it.

Oh, c'mon--when I was 19 it was cool to put the factory pistol grip on the 500a--but now as I'm older I find it is 1) Much more 'tacticool' to fire from the shoulder and hit the target 2) think that given enough reason to do so the full stocked mos.500 makes a better club.

I've grown to really like the top-tang safety, btw.

Tacticool Stuff

Best part of this site is the technical knowledge of the forum guys & posters. For the most part I see little or no BS.

Other than the safety location, and SOME forends, they are the same shotgun. Maverick & Mossberg barrels (within guage & magazine capacity) will interchange.

My Maverick 88 wears a Mossberg 18-1/2" plain cylinder bore barrel, while my OLD Mossy 500 has my original Maverick 88 28" Mod choke (3" chamber) barrel. The old Mossy had a 2-3/4" only chamber.

I have tried the pistol-grip-only...doesn't work for me. [Ask me how I got to be known as 'Rocky Raccoon' for a couple of weeks when I tested this out].

I have the 88 (field version, though), but I LOVE it nonetheless. I found the recoil to be a good bit higher than I remember it on my Brolin Security-barrel model. I added a Medium Pachmayer slip-on Recoil-pad ($10 at Sportsmans Warehouse), and I like the way it is a little longer. Add that, and a slip-on shell holder from Walmart, for under $5, and you're set.

John, how's the fit. That means a lot for felt recoil. My Mossberg has always needed more drop at comb. After reading in this BBS about shimming the stock to increase drop, suddenly, I like the gun a lot more. :D I used to have to crawl the stock and it would beat the crap out of my cheek bone on crossing shots to my off side. After fixing it, I don't look like I went three rounds with George Foreman anymore when I get home from a hunt. I mean, it'd open me up and I'd be bleedin' like a stuck hog. It was bad. Now, I'm happy.

Thanks, MC, you made my night. Knowing someone has benefited gives me major warmfuzzies....

The fit was ok, but now it is great. I am 275+/- lbs, and 6 ft. tall, to give you an idea as to what bodytype it fits well. I shot a 300 ultra mag, and the 88 felt worse with slugs and buckshot. As far as the 3" fowl shot, lets not go there. I am looking forward to the new recoil pad.

I forgot to specify, but the slugs were 2 3/4". I wonder why it is that slugs and buckshot have more kick than bird-shot, even if they are the same length.

The primary (as in cruiser ready) HD gun here at Festugn Scout is a 12ga, formerly PGO, Maverick 88, that now sports a Mossberg wood stock (but still has the black synthetic fore-end) and a Mossberg trigger group, meaning no safety.

We've a couple of other Mossberg's. I use a 500 with an adjustable comb (and several different barrels) for hunting. My wife and daughter have 20 ga 500's that they use for clay games and hunting. I've also got a 9200 that I use for clay games and the occasional upland hunt. If I ever get the bug to hunt waterfowl, I'd probably use the 9200 for that. (Less recoil then a pump, O/U. or SxS.) All have gone bang everytime I've pulled the trigger, unless I did something wrong (like not loading it, leaving the safety on, short-stroking it, etc.)

Both are good guns and can do the job if you do your part.

If you're only going to use it for HD then go with Maverick and spend the other money on ammo....BA/UU/R.

If you're going to being using it for other things, like clay games or hunting, go with one of Mossberg's combos. Still buy lots of ammo and BA/UU/R until the gun becomes part of you.

The Pistol Grip Only kit is pretty much worthless, first) you can't properly point the gun, second) follow-up shots are not as easy as with a full stocked shotgun, and third) operating the Tang safety is a real PITA.

If you're going to go with the 500, I'd go with a either one of the wood stock 6 shot models or one of the 8 shot models. FYI - all Maverick 88 and Mossberg 500 6 shot models can easily interchange barrels as long as they are the same gauge.

Again, both will serve you well, if you invest the time in the gun (shotgun classes are good idea to develop good habits and refine skills) through practice and training.

I bought a Maverick 88 over the mossy 500 for the sole reason of the safety being on the trigger guard over the rear tang. The fact I got it for 199 vs. the mossberg for an extra 150 bucks is a bonus :D

I've got the Mav 88 and love it. However, as one of the other posters noted, the recoil with slugs was freakin painful. I need to pick up a recoil pad.

And I too like the safety location on the 88 vs. the 500.

Is it bad that I still want a pistol grip for it? It's just an HD gun, so precision aiming wouldn't be *too* necessary. :)

If I may chime in for anyone who mentioned recoil..... FWIW, YMMV etc

I'm a little guy, 175lbs or so... and I put a Knoxx SpecOps on my Mossberg 500. 1st time I took it to the range I blew through 100 slugs~ and would have kept going if I had more with me! And- no bruising or even soreness the next day....

The Knoxx website claims that their stocks reduce felt recoil by over 50%. I'm planning on putting one on my 590A1 to test it.
