Most interesting firearms comment in "l337" slang

Because abbreviations are designed to make communications FASTER. This nonsense makes it SLOWER because it saves NO keystrokes (it actually adds keystrokes in some instances, but even when it doesn't add letters, it requires just as many), and more importantly, requires translation from numbers to to letters, which requires thought, which slows you down, not speeds you up.
I agree that all this l337 stuff is stupid. However... keep in mind that this derived from text messaging where you are not using a computer keyboard but a cell phone where each key stands for 3 or 4 letters, uppercase and lower case, plus the numeral. Thus, assuming auto capitalization, I would have to key 443366777999#22666 [pause] 6266 to type "Henry bowman"

I have a Blackberry with a full keyboard on board. I don't text message.

Erm.... in my personal experience, "l33t" speak was in existence long before cell phone text messaging was possible.

Well, in theory the earliest version of leetspeak came about in the late '80s from hacker websites, where a numeral was substituted for a letter (3 for E, 4 for A, 1 for L, etc) because they were paranoid about the government or BBS admins scanning for certain words in the text of their posts.

They thought is they wrote "h4ck" instead of "hack", they'd be safe. The Wiki for leet is pretty well written.

Of course, it's now evloved into something more...stupid...

It was -- and still is -- a popular way of creating passwords that would meet security constraints such as requiring at least one alpha, one numeric, one non-alphanumeric, and so on. E.g., Hello becomes |-|311o, etc.

And of course so as to have a in-group jargon. As if computer jargon wasn't enough.

Brandon, thats a good one. i kinda laughed when i first saw that kel-tec nomenclature on the .380... makes me wonder what the p11 stands for. i'll be 47 years old in a few months (don't look a day over 46) and i'm a fps gamer. my clan is playing cod2 (call of duty) right now (very accurate ww2 weapons) but played sof2 (soldier of fortune) for about 3 years (i like the modern weapons better) and only a few of my group actually own guns. i post pics of my guns on our website, and try to get others interested, but most live in california, so it's a waste of time. we are all older guys and gals and do not allow anyone under 21 to join. there is virtually no leetspeak in our server. once in a while a typo will get popular but that is it. one time a guy was trying to type boom and it came out bnoom, so bnoom was the word for a while. been fps since wolfenstein 3d in 1992 i think( the first one, before doom (the first doom)) and will probably be kicken' some fps butt 'till i die.

watch out for the old dudes... "youth and skill are no match for age and treachury"

For Great Justice,

TAKE OFF EVERY SIG

Well, Sir, I LIKE my SIG (P-226). I take it off to shower of course, and out of common courtesy, I take it off before I lay down at night with my wife...but otherwise, I find when I take it off I feel...well...nekkid.

Those of you with the "Queen's English" comments kill me. I bet you use jargon in your daily life, and I'm pretty sure that ain't the "queen's" English you are using. (One poster immediately followed his "Queen's English" boast with a sentence fragment:neener: .)

In fact English is a bastard/hybrid language that has been evolving/expanding since Normans and Anglo-Saxons started mixing. Language snobbery is for the French.

Abbreviation and slang expand the language, rather than diminish it.

As for you CS gamers...

FPS Doug is teh win.

I'll admit to using the word "DEagle" to mean my Desert Eagle. However, I think that can be forgiven by the fact I'm calling my first rifle "Smeagol".

And on topic:
Move Sig!!! (preferably in my direction!)
