You can still find used .500 S&Ws for 850-895. That would be my choice for most powerful under 1000.

Didn't EAA market a pistol called "Thor" a few years back?

It came in several calibers, I think up to 30-06.

To parisite, the "Thor" you said market by EAA is actually the italian Tanfoglio "Raptor" model, imported in USA from Italy by European American Armory (EAA).
This particular hand(as it were)gun is a singleshot pistol, with 14" or 15" barrel, intentionally made for hunting - that in Italy is illegal with handguns! - and chambered in several
calibers, among which .45/70, .500 S&W, .30-06, .308, 7mm Rem, .44 Mag, etc.
