This is a pretty dumb rookie question but ive never owned a scoped rifle before.

I want to put a scope on my marlin model 60, but have no idea what I need to get. Scope rings, a scope base, scope mount? These terms just confuse me. Ill be bringing it to a shop to have everything mounted, but no idea on what I need to buy.

Also, can anyone recommend a good rimfire scope for under $100?

Thanks.

Your scope rings should mount directly to the dovetail.

I have a Famous Maker 2-7x on my M60. I like it a lot. Good enough for my purpose and cost $20.

Save the money you'd spend at the shop and put it towards more ammo or something. It's not rocket science to mount a scope, and once you have all the parts you'll how easy it is and be happy you didn't waste the extra money. :)

Your Model 60 should look something like this when done. Just need to pick up the right rings for the rail and scope.

Tasco .22 scope rings a Wally World $5.97 you can't go wrong.

This is this! It's not something else, it's this!

You don't need a base it is machined into the top of the receiver, and you can't just use any scope rings, you do need to buy rim-fire rings. I bought some weaver quad locks from midway for $10 dollars. They seem to work pretty good. You also didn't state how much your willing to spend. I would definitely recommend the Nikon pro staff rim-fire 4x. A few years ago I bought a bass pro redhead 4x scope for my 60. It works just fine for what I use it for target plinking, squirrel, etc but I just put a 3x9 pro staff on my savage btvs .17hmr and wow, tons of difference.

dont' get scope bases, with just one screw going through the bottom to attach to the rail; they are too skinny and the teeth on them are not wide enough, to give a good enough friction hold. they will start to ' rail walk' from recoil.
this is a super common problem on mod 60's. make sure the scope bases have two screws through the bottom of them, they will then be twice as wide at the teeth that hold on to the rail.
Best scope for a 100 bucks or less would be either a Tasco varmint series scope, or this is the abosolute best scope under 100 bucks ever; and it is under 50. It is rated to take adult, spring piston, break barrel, air rifle recoil, which is way worse, than rimfire or even centerfire rifles. It also can adjust focus/ parrallax down to about 10 ft. most rimfires are not parralax free, until 100 yds, same with centerfire scopes.

now this scope comes with rings, but do you see how the bases only have 1 screw going through the bases? that means that the teeth that dig into the rail are not that wide. These could then ' walk ' around on your rail, even though they are pretty wide for single screw. You won't know until you try them , though.

you could do this, and if they start walking , either get 2 screw, wider bases rings, or get Kwik site, tip off blocks, put them on your rail, and then just add the above rings. these are super stable, but will make your scope sit up very high, and you have to adjust your neck/head up higher, to look through the scope. both rifles in the pics of the dudes' above , looks like they are both sitting on the kwik site blocks, see that?
