I am planning to mount a scope on my Marlin 512 Slugmaster. Though I've taken a few deer out with the irons, the sights are just too hard to see in low-light conditions and I don't want to miss any opportunities this coming season. The problem is that my mounting options seem to be limited...to the extreme. The (used) Slugmaster came with a Weaver 10M side-mount base, which I believe is the only base that will fit the gun, pictured here:

Likewise, it seems the only rings that will fit this base are the Weaver 1" detachable side-mount rings:

Bottom line is that I'm not sure I'm digging my "options" here. I don't like that these rings have a "hinge" on one side instead of having two screws on each side. I wish there was a base for my gun that allowed me to use standard type rings...something kinda like this:

Am I missing something or am I pretty much looking at my only option?

Weaver rings like yours have been in widespread use for about 60 years now.

Properly mounted, they will stay put on a .458 WinMag.

I would suggest you take the side mount off, and clean the screws & holes with solvent. Then re-attach using BLUE Lock-Tight on the screws, and under the base.

The rings themselves do not need Lock-Tight to make the scope stay put.

Okay, thanks. The design is just something I'm not used to seeing, and it seems a little unstable.
